Preparing for CSET

In addition to completing a teaching credential, to teach in the elementary grades in California, you must show "subject matter competency"--that you know the subjects taught in an elementary classroom.

What are future Teachers expected to know?

As a result of State Board of Education actions to meet federal "No Child Left Behind" (NCLB) requirements for teacher quality, elementary teacher credential candidates must
take and pass the state approved subject matter examination (CSET: Multiple Subjects).

How should I prepare for the CSET?
How courses at SF State satisfy the content specifications for the subject Requirement for the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.
Review the CSET Test Guides, including sample questions and responses.

Study for and take the CBEST first. This test is required of ALL applicants to credential programs, so you'll need to take it anyway. You may take the CBEST at any time - the score never expires. It is best to take the CBEST as soon after completing your General Education Written Communication (English 214 at SF State) and Quantitative Reasoning requirements, since it tests you on your English and math skills.
Buy a study guide and practice taking the test.

You may want to read the following books as general background :
Hirsch, E. D. What Your Fourth Grader Needs to Know
Hirsch, E. D. What Your Fifth Grader Needs to Know
Hirsch, E. D. What Your Sixth Grader Needs to Know
You also might want to read some elementary school level textbooks and/or rent videotapes on the subjects covered on the CSET.
Consider taking a preparation course if you are unsure of your test-taking abilities or if it's been awhile since you've taken a standardized test - check with your local college to see if such courses are offered (SF State offers a course through the College of Extended Learning ).
Have a positive attitude ! It's likely that you've been successful at most things you've tried in life so far, so it's also likely that you can pass the CSET if you prepare as outlined above and have confidence in your abilities.

When Should I Take the CSET?
The CSET score is valid for five years. Most colleges and universities require that you pass the exam or complete the equivalency before being admitted to their credential program. Thus, you should talk to the schools you are considering attending to find out when you should take the exam. It is probably a good idea to take the exam before your final semester as an undergraduate. If you fail the exam, or any part of it, you then have the choice of retaking the test and remaining in school to complete the courses that will prepare you for teaching and for the exam.
