The SF State Logo
Usage Guidelines
The SF State logo is a key factor in shaping public perception of our University. Consistent use of the SF State logo will ensure the strength and longevity of the SF State brand and contribute to the success of the University's mission. Please adhere to the following guidelines when developing materials with the SF State logo.

-
Do Not Separate
The two components in the SF State logo (the graphical and the logotype components) should NEVER be separated from each other.
-
Do Not Replicate
Use only the original source versions of the SF State logo, available on the Downloads page and by request from the Office of University Communications. Do not create printed or electronic materials using a version of the logo that has been photocopied, scanned, screen-grabbed, copied from a Web site, recreated in a graphic design application or drawn by hand.
-
Do Not Distort
Do not skew, scale, stretch, extrude, emboss or otherwise distort the SF State logo. It should appear on all materials exactly as it appears in the source version selected. Do not change colors, add type, add drop shadows or any other graphical flourishes that affect the integrity of the logo.
-
Maintain a Cushion of Clear Space
The logo in any style should be surrounded by an ample cushion of clear space. The minimum size of the clear space cushion should equal one-half the width of the graphical component, or at least 1/4". The logo should not overlap or be overlapped by type, illustration, photos, other logos or other design elements.
-
Color Logo: White Background Only
The color version of either logo execution should be placed on a white background only.
-
Color Logo: Do Not Use For Black and White Prints
If you know that the final output device for your material will be black and white laser prints or photocopies, do not use the color logo in your source file, use the black and white logo.
-
Black and White Logo: White or Light Background Only
The black and white version of either logo execution should be placed on a white or light background only.
-
Black and White Logo: Do Not Colorize
The black and white version of the logo uses black only, at two different percentages. The source art for the black and white logo should NEVER be modified to create a one-color version of the logo in any color other than black.
-
Do Not Reverse
Do not create "reverse" executions of either the color or b&w versions of the logo. If none of the standard, approved versions of the logo work on the type of material you are producing, please consider redesigning the piece, or contact the Office of University Communications for a consultation.
-
Minimum Logo Size
Except for special circumstances, the logo should not be reduced beyond the following minimum dimensions:
- Vertical version of logo: 0.1" tall
- Horizontal version of logo: 0.75" tall
-
Do not extract a portion of or modify the logo
For some University-wide branding projects designed by University Communications, a portion of the logo is extracted and used in a simulated "watermark." No other offices or entities have permission to use the "watermark" treatment, and no other extractions/modifications of the logo are allowed for any purpose.
