Leadership Workshops

Each semester, we host a series of workshops on a variety of topics related to leadership that are free and open to all SF State students regardless of previous leadership experience on or off campus. These workshops serve as an opportunity for student leaders to further develop their own personal leadership skills and interact with other students, faculty and staff in a small setting. Students that complete the entire workshop series each semester will receive special recognition at the annual Leadership in Action Awards held in April 2010. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience for your resume!

Tues. 09.15.09	Planning Successful Events Time: 12:00pm-1:00pm Location: T-160 (Student Center) Presenter: Sarah Bauer, Advisor, LEAD (Leadership, Engagement, Action, Development) Workshop Description: Have you ever hosted an event that was not as successful as you had hoped? Are you thinking about planning an important event and want some assistance? Do you want to learn how to make your events more successful? If you answered yes to any of these questions, attend this workshop to learn the basics of event planning.
Tues. 09.22.09	Civic Engagement Time: 12:00pm-1:00pm Location: T-160 (Student Center) Presenter: Adam Calmenson, Program Coordinator, Institute for Civic & Community Engagement Workshop Description: This workshop will explain the definition of Civic Engagement, and how student leaders can take advantage of the service learning opportunities here at SFSU.

Learn to use Perfect Interview, the Career Center’s Web-based resource. You can even conduct your own on-line practice interviews.

Tues. 09.29.09	Student Leader Fundraising Time: 12:00pm-1:00pm Location: T-160 (Student Center) Presenter: Alberto Olivares, Advisor, LEAD (Leadership, Engagement, Action, Development) Workshop Description: The workshop is directed at student organization leaders who are seeking to raise money for their organizations. Objectives: To prepare student officers to develop successful fundraising events that can do much more than raise money for an organization. To build unity and cohesion in the group, give program-planning experience to new group members and add wide-range campus and community visibility to the organization.
Tues. 10.06.09	Being LEADERFUL: Values Congruence Time: 12:00pm-1:00pm Location: T-160 (Student Center) Presenter: Sarah Bauer, Advisor, LEAD (Leadership, Engagement, Action, Development) Workshop Description: Do you have values? Sure. Can you articulate what your values are? Probably. If your friends and peers were asked what your values are based on their interactions with you, would their answer be the same as yours? That is the $64,000 question. In this workshop, we will explore the concept of Congruence from the Social Change Model of Leadership Development and explore ways in which leaders can become more LEADERFUL by making decisions and acting in ways that are more aligned with their values.

You will also be introduced to Optimal Resume, the Career Center’s Web-based resource, to help you create your resume. Held in a computer lab on campus (Burk Hall 210), participants will be able to work on their OrgSync portals throughout the workshop.

Tues. 10.27.09	Do You Know What it Means to be...?: Creating an Organizational Brand to Enhance Recruitment/Retention Strategies Time: 12:00pm-1:00pm Location: Rosa Parks D (Student Center) Presenter: Joseph Greenwell, Director of LEAD and Acting Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Workshop Description: When people hear your organization's name, what three words come to mind?... What images do they see? If you are not sure, then it is time to look review your organization's brand (how you PR what it means to be part of your group). We will look at branding strategies and discuss how using such PR mechanisms will assist you in year-long recruitment for new members, as well as retention of current members.
Thur. 10.29.09	Scholarship and Fellowship Opportunities for Student Leaders Time: 4:00pm-5:00pm Location: T-160 (Student Center) Presenter: Joy Viveros, Fellowship Advisor Workshop Description: Learn about nationally competitive scholarships, fellowships, and grants that fund student leaders for public service projects and graduate studies in the U.S. and abroad. Meet Dr. Joy Viveros, SFSU's Fellowship Advisor, who will be your ally and mentor if you apply for one or more of these opportunities.

Tues. 11.17.09	Finding the Perfect Internship Time: 4:00pm-5:00pm Location: Career Center - Student Services Building, room 206 Presenter: Career Center Staff Workshop Description: Career-related work experience will be a major advantage to candidates in today’s competitive job market. Discover the steps for finding an internship or co-op position. All juniors are encouraged to attend.

Tues. 12.01.09	Approaching Conflict Time: 12:00pm-1:00pm Location: T-160 (Student Center) Presenter: Sarah Bauer, Advisor, LEAD (Leadership, Engagement, Action, Development) Workshop Description: Conflict is an inherent part of leadership, so why not embrace it and love it instead of hating it and avoiding it? In this workshop, we will explore the benefits of conflict and different ways to approach conflict depending on the type of conflict.
