HOW TO PROGRESS TOWARD THE BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN JAPANESE

The following is semester-by-semester instruction on courses to take. Complete lists of elective courses and supporting courses are also found below.

1. CORE COURSES (Required)

JAPN 101, 102, 103 are prerequisites for upper-division courses. JAPN 301, 302, 305 or 306, 309, 325, 401, and 510 are required upper-division core courses.
Courses 101, 102, 103, and 301 are offered every semester.
302, 305 or 306, 309, 325, 401, and 510 are usually offered every other semester.

1st Semester
JAPN 101 Firest Semester Japanese

2nd Semester
JAPN 102 Second Semester Japanese
(Also take Level 1 of Kanji in JAPN 250: Intensive Study of Kanji, a supporting course, in the 2nd semester. This Kanji course can be repeated as many times as needed. JAPN 250 includes five progressive levels.)

3rd Semester

(Also take Level 2 of Kanji in JAPN 250: Intensive Study of Kanji, in the 3rd semester.)

If JAPN 302 is not offered in the 4th semester, students may take, in addition to JAPN 250 and JAPN 301, other courses (such as JAPN 325 Practical Linguistics of Japanese, JAPN 401 Topics in Japanese Culture, JAPN 330 Proverbs and Idiomatic Expressions in Japanese, JAPN 305/306 Advanced Conversation and Composition) on advisement. (In addition to these required courses, students may take elective courses.
We also urge that students take Level 4 of Kanji in JAPN 250 in the 5th/6th semester to go beyond the required 1000 "Educational Kanji." Remember that the knowledge of about 2000 kanji is necessary to read Japanese newspapers! )

7th or 8th Semester

(Also complete the elective course requirements in this semester. Students are strongly advised to take Level 5 of Kanji in JAPN 250 to further increase their kanji knowledge.)

JAPN 510 is the most advanced course among all the required courses that count toward the B.A. degree in Japanese, and it the course in which students' exit-level reading and writing skills in Japanese are assessed. Be sure to take JAPN 309 Advanced Reading in Japanese as well as JAPN 305 or 306 Advanced Conversation and Composition BEFORE taking JAPN 510. Those who have not completed the Level 3 Kanji requirement are not allowed to take JAPN 510.
