IHHS Mission

The mission of the Institute for Holistic Healing Studies (IHHS) is to provide the university and broader community with a comprehensive foundation of knowledge and skills for developing personal health and well-being through instruction, innovative research and extracurricular programs.

To help deepen this understanding of health a cross-cultural, multi-disciplinary perspective is employed, including ancient and modern ideas and practices from around the world. Key elements of this understanding are the notions of responsibility and wholeness. Responsibility indicates that the individual's participation in the processes of health and healing is crucial. Wholeness describes the person's body, mind and spirit interacting and interdependent with the environment.

Ultimately, the Institute seeks to encourage individuals toward increased self and ecological awareness, a greater capacity for self-regulation, and an improved ability to generalize these understandings to all aspects of life. This may be realized by improved health, more meaningful and creative work, enhanced personal relationships, or deeper spiritual (transpersonal) understandings.

There are many specific applications and forms of holistic health. Some are derived from ancient healing traditions and others from modern research. These areas include: stress management, behavioral medicine, applied psychophysiology, biofeedback, Autogenic Training, Traditional Chinese Medicine (including acupuncture, acupressure, herbology, nutrition, qi-gong), meditation, guided imagery, yoga, somatic therapies (such as: therapeutic touch and subtle energy therapies), and ecological thinking and living.
