Speak Out for Education in California!

Public education in California is in a crisis. Tens of thousands of students have been denied admission to the CSU; enrolled students cannot get their classes; hundreds of dedicated teachers have lost their jobs; and so many classes have been cancelled that the dream of graduating in four years has been lost.

SF State lecturer Philip Klasky has produced a 27-minute documentary, available at http://speakout4edu.com/home.html that features in-depth commentary from concerned CSU students, teachers and staff. The film analyzes the history of the budget cuts, spending priorities of California spending, and what California should be doing to save the CSU. Use it to get involved!

ICCE is working with a group of SF State students who are passionate about the future of education in California . Student Engineered Initiatives in Social Media Involving Community ( SEISMIC ) uses social media tools and community organizing skills to engage other students and their families in civic action. Contact Bonnie Hale via email: bhale@sfsu.edu to get involved.

Supporting Education in California

California's public schools, colleges and universities are facing more than $11 billion in State budget cuts. These cuts will affect public education, millions of students and their families and communities, and the State's jobs and economic future for years to come. At San Francisco State University, students can expect to see a 10% increase in tuition fees next fall and 150 course section offerings have been cut from the class schedule.

SEISMIC students hope to engage others in civic action. Seismic is looking for personal stories, whether in Word, email, or video format, about how budget cuts impact other students and their families. Stories will be used to empower others to become advocates for higher education as a long-term investment and solution to the State's economic crisis. Stories may be sent via email to icce@sfsu.edu in ascii text, as Word attachments, or URLs for YouTube videos.
