PURPOSE
The STAR Program is intended to identify and recognize SFSU staff members who distinguish themselves in their performance and contributions to the University. These are employees who have demonstrated the ability to promote the University’s mission and who strive for the highest possible standards in that endeavor.
ELIGIBILITY
All staff members, excluding Unit 4, who are in temporary, probationary or permanent positions are eligible for consideration. Additionally, a predefined project/work team may be considered.
CRITERIA
Guidelines for consideration include performance, achievements, community service and teamwork. Criteria include:
- Demonstrated exceptional performance
- Recommended and implemented a new idea or procedure to increase efficiency
- Demonstrated a keen appreciation of the University community through effective teamwork and cooperation
- Enhanced the image of the University through quality interactions with others, promoting a user-friendly environment and/or engaging in external community service activities
PROCESS
STAR Program is administered by the Human Resources Professional Development unit with nominations and selections conducted by a STAR Program Committee that is comprised of ten (10) staff with a wide University representation. All STAR Committee members are selected on a volunteer basis by each Cabinet area (3 - Academic Affairs; 2 - Student Affairs; 3 - Business & Finance; 1 - University Advancement; 1 - President's Office) and serve for up to two years. A Committee Chair from the Human Resources Department will schedule and officiate at monthly STAR Program meetings.
Nominations for STAR of the Month may be made by the supervisor, other staff, faculty or students. To nominate an individual complete a STAR nomination form (P570A) obtained in HR, on the HR website or from the supervisor. Nominees will remain in the pool for one year from their last nomination. Employees may be selected as STAR of the Month once during a twelve month period. The STAR Committee shall randomly select a STAR of the Year from among the twelve previous recognized STARs.
The STAR Committee shall review and discuss the nominations and make a selection on a random basis from all eligible nominees. The Committee shall notify all nominees as well as the employee selected as STAR of the month. The Human Resources Professional Development unit will arrange for the awards. The dollar amount of employee recognition awards will be reported as taxable income in accordance with IRS regulations.
STAR of the Month Award
- Reserved parking on Campus for one month or equivalent in public transportation expenses
- Gift certificate for Stonestown Galleria
- Feature article in University publication, photo and article on SFSU website
- Thank you letter from President and a certificate of recognition
