Fee Waiver & Reduction Program

The California State University offers eligible employees and their eligible dependents the opportunity to enroll in  courses offered by the CSU at a reduced fee.


Deadlines

Employees, as well as dependents, must adhere to University registration fee payment deadlines or they will be subject to additional University fees.  If the reduced registration fees through the Fee Waiver & Reduction Program are not paid by the deadlines given by the University, fee waiver participants will be required to pay the corresponding additional fees.

Employee

Employees may enroll in the Fee Waiver program for the purposes of improving skills for existing jobs, or advancement in accordance with an approved career development plan leading to a career in the CSU.

University employees eligible to participate are:

  • Full time with permanent status
  • Part time with permanent status
  • Full time probationary
  • Full time temporary (appointments that are full time temporary should extend through the duration of the semester of application)
  • Employees in the categories listed above and/or who are on approved full or partial leaves of absence with or without pay, remain eligible.
  • Tenured and probationary faculty unit employees, temporary faculty unit employees with at least six years of full-time equivalent service in the department and lecturers with 3-year contract status.
  • Faculty participating in the Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP) are eligible during the period in which they teach.

University employees NOT eligible to participate are:

  • Student Assistants
  • Temporary part time employees unless they have been awarded permanent status by the President
  • Those who terminate employment during enrollment in the program

Dependent

The CSU offers eligible employees the option to transfer his or her fee waiver benefit to a spouse, domestic partner or dependent child who meets the enrollment conditions. 

Eligibility

Dependents that are eligible to receive your fee waiver benefits include:

  • your legal spouse
  • registered domestic partner (with the exception of Unit 8)
  • dependent child who is:
    • your child or stepchild under age 23 who has never been married (25 for CSUEU)
    • a child living with you in a parent-child relationship and is economically dependent upon you, under age 23 and has never been married
    • your child or stepchild age 23 or above who is incapable of self-support due to a disability which existed prior to age 23. 

ENROLLMENT CONDITIONS

1.   In order to participate in the Fee Waiver program, your spouse, registered domestic partner or dependent child must:

  • Be matriculated in a degree program at a CSU campus;
  • Be enrolled in courses that will count for credit toward completion of a designated degree;
  • Be a California resident.

2.   You may transfer your fee waiver eligibility to one person only (a spouse, registered domestic partner or dependent child) regardless of whether that individual uses the full entitlement of 2 courses or 6 units.

3.   If both parents are eligible, each may confer their fee waiver benefit.

  • Normal academic standards must be maintained.
  • Your spouse, registered domestic partner or dependent child may participate in an inter-campus enrollment with a CSU campus other than the campus where you are employed.  Approval will be for one term only and is subject to space availability at the host campus.

4.   You may not use the Fee Waiver Program during the terms of your dependent's enrollment.

Individual Career Development Plan (ICDP)

The Individual Career Development Plan (ICDP) is a formal definitive plan of coursework, on the job training and development activities which may lead toward qualifying for target classifications within the California State University.

A completed ICDP form is required for SFSU staff enrolled in courses that are a part of an approved career development plan. ICDP forms are not required for Dependent Fee Waiver enrollees.
