Specialized training is offered upon request that includes and is not limited to appropriate employee classifications.
Purpose: This course provides asbestos awareness training for employees who work near asbestos-containing building material (ACBM) identified on the campus. This course provides procedures that comply with the Asbestos Standard revision of 1995.
Frequency: Initial / Annual
Training is required for: Affected employees exposed over the permissible exposure limits (PEL) and those who perform Class I-IV work.
Purpose: This course provides employees with a general understanding of the structure of the spine, the importance of body posture with weight-bearing activities, and proper lifting technique to promote general back safety. Employees are encouraged to maintain a healthy back lifestyle for all job activities, personal activities, or to simply enjoy life and to relax.
Frequency: Upon request
Training is required for: Employees in affected job classifications
Back to TopPurpose: This course provides employees with training on Hepatitis B, a disease that causes inflammation of the liver. The Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) strikes approximately 200,000 persons in the United States each year. Hepatitis B is usually spread by contact with infected blood or blood products. The disease may also be transmitted through illicit injectable drug use, tattooing, ear piercing, and through intimate sexual contact. The Hepatitis B virus may be found in other body fluids such as urine, tears, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk.
Frequency: Initial/Annual
Training is required for: All employees in job classifications at risk for exposure to blood and other bodily fluids.
Back to TopPurpose: This course provides training for employees who may encounter electrical hazards during at work. Employees review safe work practices and the use of protective equipment. This course is not a substitute for specialized training on electrical installation methods learned during an electrician apprenticeship program.
Frequency: Initial / Annual
Training is required for: All employees in job classifications at risk for exposure to electrical hazards at work.
Back to TopPurpose: This course provides employees with a proactive Ergonomic training and assessment approach to promote general well-being. The course intends to reduce the incidence of injuries in the work place and bring awareness to and manage poor work habits. Employees may request an ergonomics evaluation of their workstation to EHOS.
Frequency: Upon request
Training is required for: Employees in affected job classifications
Back to TopPurpose: This course addresses safety procedures and standards for University employees and hired contractors working on elevated surfaces and ladders at heights of 6 feet or more. Components of this program are modeled after Cal/OSHA and ANSI standards.
The course reviews the nature of fall hazards at the work place, safety monitoring systems, controlled access zones, the use and operation of guardrail systems, personal fall arrest systems, safety net systems, warning line systems, controlled access zones, and other personal fall protection systems.
Frequency: Initial
Training is required for: All employees at risk for falls of 6-feet or more at the work place.
Back to TopPurpose: This course provides employees with recommended work practices to protect themselves from hazards and exposures to hazardous substances found in various forms and concentrations at the workplace. Work practices are reviewed which include emergency procedures and appropriate personal protective equipment use. The course teaches employees how to use hazard information such the labeling system and material safety data sheet (MSDS), in the event of an accidental hazardous substance exposure.
Frequency: Initial / New chemicals or processes
Training is required for: All employees at risk for hazardous substance exposure.
Back to TopPurpose: This course provides employees with information on how properly control, manage, and anticipate exposure to hazardous waste that poses potential harm to human health and the environment. Emphasis is placed on controls to review and monitor exposure levels for all hazardous waste operations and to follow appropriate University hazardous waste management guidelines and emergency response.
Frequency: Initial / Annual
Training is required for: All employees that handle and generate hazardous waste.
Back to TopPurpose: This course provides information about the risks to workers exposed to noise at or above 85 decibels (dBA) averaged over 8-working hours, or an eight (8) hour time-weighted average (TWA). The University maintains a program to monitor hearing exposure risk and provides professional audiometric testing and evaluation.
Audiometric testing for employees is conducted by a licensed audiologist, otolaryngologist (commonly referred to as ENT physicians), qualified physician, or trained technician. Annual audiograms are compared with a baseline audiogram to determine if there is any deterioration of the worker’s hearing (threshold shift). When a worker suffers a significant threshold shift, the University must fit or refit the worker with hearing protectors, train or retrain workers on appropriate protective equipment use, and ensure that protective hearing equipment is used during work hours.
Frequency: Initial / Annual
Training is required for: All employees exposed to noise at or above 85 decibels (dBA) averaged over 8-working hours, or an eight (8) hour time-weighted average (TWA)
Back to TopPurpose: The Injury and Illness Prevention Program is required by California Senate Bill 198 and implemented under the California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Chapter 4, Section 3203. Each S.F. State University department is required to have a written Injury and Illness Prevention Program. This program provides guidance to University employees in all job classifications, including student employees, academic and administrative staff, hired contractors, volunteers, and all employees directly under the control of the employing department at the work site.
Frequency: Initial / Annual
Training is required for: All employees
Back to TopPurpose: The purpose of this course is to provide appropriate lead awareness information to employees who work with or are exposed to lead-containing paint and other lead containing substances.
Frequency: Initial / Annual
Training is required for: Affected employees/Supervisors
Back to TopPurpose: The purpose of this course is to review hazardous energy sources with employees who directly operate, repair, or maintain equipment or machinery where unexpected start-up or release of stored energy may result in injury or death.
Frequency: Initial or When Updated
Training is required for: Affected Employees
Back to TopPurpose: The purpose of this course is to provide employees information and instruction in the use of personal protective equipment in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Information is shared to eliminate or mitigate the occupational hazards associated with the employees work or activity. Emphasis of the training is to safeguard one’s health by obtaining appropriate equipment to protect the head, ear, eye, nose, mouth, body, hand, and foot.
Frequency: Initial Training is required for: All PPE Users

Respiratory protective equipment is used when the air or atmosphere impairs breathing. Emphasis is placed on the review of appropriate respiratory protection for certain risk exposures.
Frequency: Initial / Annual
Training is required for: All employees subject to respiratory exposures at the workplace.
