Life and Disability Insurance Benefits

Term Life Insurance

The CSU pays the premium for basic term life insurance for certain units as follows:

  • Unit 1 (UAPD) $ 25,000
  • Units 2, 5, 7, 9 (CSEA) $ 10,000
  • Unit 3 (Faculty) $ 50,000
  • Unit 4 (APC) $ 25,000
  • Unit 8 (SUPA) $ 10,000
  • Unit 11 (Teaching Associates) $ 30,000
  • Unit 12 (Head Start) $ 50,000
  • Confidentials $ 50,000
  • Executives $ 250,000
  • MPP $100,000

Accidental Death and Disability Benefits

The CSU pays the premium for basic term accidental death and dismemberment insurance for certain units as follows:

  • Unit 1 (UAPD) $ 25,000
  • Units 2, 5, 7, 9 (CSEA) $ 10,000
  • Unit 3 (Faculty) $ 50,000
  • Unit 4 (APC) $ 25,000
  • Unit 8 (SUPA) $ 10,000
  • Unit 11 (Teaching Associates) none
  • Unit 12 (Head Start) $ 50,000
  • Confidentials $ 50,000
  • Executives $ 250,000
  • MPP $100,000

Long-Term Disability

The CSU pays the premium for long-term disability insurance for Units 1, 3, 4, and MPP. The coverage is provided by Standard Life Insurance Company, replacing 66 2/3% (up to $10,000) of an employee's salary after 180 days of disability. For Unit 6, the long-term disability plan replaces 50% of the first $15,000 (up to $7,500) of an employee's salary until age 65. Long-term insurance coverage is provided by The Standard Life Insurance Company, and there is a 180-day waiting period before the benefit begins.

Voluntary Long Term Disability

  • The CSU provides eligible employees the opportunity to purchase Voluntary Long Term Disability (LTD) insurance. LTD insurance is designed to pay a monthly benefit to you in the event you cannot work for an extended period of time because of a covered illness or injury. This LTD benefit replaces a portion of your income, helping you to meet your financial commitments in a time of need.
This plan offers you the option to select a Benefit Waiting Period and your Benefit Amount.
  • Benefit Waiting Period - Choose either 30 or 90 days
  • Benefit Amount - Choose increments of $100 from $500 to a maximum of $7,500 (not to exceed 60% of your predisability earnings)
If your LTD claim is approved by The Standard, LTD benefits become payable at the end of the benefit waiting period. No benefits are payable during the benefit waiting period. For answers to commonly asked

Voluntary Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

The California State University recognizes that individuals have different needs and has provided you the opportunity to apply for the right amount of protection for you and your family at very competitive group rates. Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment covers you or your beneficiaries, in the event of death or dismemberment as a result of a covered accident. You may elect Voluntary AD&D coverage in the following amounts:

  1. $25,000
  2. $50,000
  3. $75,000
  4. $100,000
  5. $150,000
  6. $200,000
  7. $250,000
  8. $300,000
  9. $400,000
  10. $500,000
  11. $600,000
  12. $700,000
  13. $800,000
  14. $900,000
  15. $1,000,000

If you elect coverage for yourself, you may elect coverage for your dependents in the following amounts:

  1. Spouse/domestic partner only, 60 percent of your coverage
  2. Children only, 15 percent of your coverage for each child
  3. Spouse/domestic partner and children, 50 percent of our coverage for your Spouse/domestic partner and 10 percent for your coverage for each child. Coverage for children may not exceed $25,000

Group Critical Illness - Aflac

Medical and out-of-pocket expenses related to critical illnesses can be overwhelming to you and your loved ones. Aflac now offers CSU employees group critical illness insurance that provides a lump sum payment to assist you with paying for expenses that accompany specified critical illnesses. In addition, Aflac provides a cash benefit for such health screenings as mammography, colonoscopy, cervical cancer screening, and others (visit website for plan details).
Covered critical illnesses include heart attack, stroke, major organ transplant, renal failure, coronary artery bypass surgery and cancer. You must be enrolled in a compre­hensive health insurance plan or an HMO plan in order to qualify. (The health plan can be outside of the CSU.)
