Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I not receive a cable reception?
First, make sure your TV is programmed in its main menu. Try using your remote control and/or your TV's menu button to adjust the settings. Make sure that your coaxial cable is plugged in and running from the cable outlet in the wall to the correct input on your TV. If you are still having difficulty, contact RS by submitting a RS Request Form.

Why doesn't my heater work?
First, check to make sure that your thermostat is turned up to the desired temperature. Second, make sure that the fan knob above the thermostat is turned on (Lo/Med/Hi). If the heater still does not work, e-mail RS a request. The appropriate staff member will assess your situation within 48 business hours.

How do I request a vacuum?
Vacuums can be loaned to a resident through the RA on your floor or community desk. Remember to bring your student ID to borrow the vacuum.

Whom do I contact to help me set-up my internet?
Contact Apogee at 1-888-478-8864 or www.apogeenet.net

How do I make and receive phone calls in my room?
All incoming calls are free to residents. If you would like to make a long distance phone call, please contact Telecommunications at extension x8-7700 to set-up an account.

How do I request a refund if the laundry and/or vending machine ate my money?
You can request a refund online! To fill out the form, you will need to provide the building the machine is located, the machine number, the requestor's name, address, phone where a message can be left and the refund amount. A staff member will contact the person when the refund has been approved. Residents' refunds get deposited to their gator dollar account. Non-residents will not be provided refunds unless they obtain a visitor one card.

How do I prevent mildew?
Newcomers to San Francisco and the Bay Area - especially to those who live near the Pacific Ocean like we do - will find themselves faced with the problem of condensation in their Residence Hall rooms. This problem becomes substantially worse in damp, rainy, or foggy weather. However, there are steps you can take to avoid the growth of mildew:

  • Cross-ventilate your room for at least ten minutes a day. Leave your window open when you are in your room especially if you are on the first floor.

  • Keep restroom windows open

  • Do not air dry your clothes in your room.

  • Do not use humidifier in the room

  • Use bags of calcium chloride (available at hardware stores) to absorb moisture in confined areas such as closets. Dry-out can be purchased at Walgreens.

  • Wipe moisture from the inside of your windows and/or walls.

  • If you see signs of mildew submit a RS Request Form. Our housekeeping associates have been professionally trained to remove mildew from your room. After it has been removed, unless the cause of the mildew has been found and eliminated, it may reappear in a month or two. Please check the area and again contact us.

How do I get a lock out key if my community desk is closed?
In the evening when your desk is closed, the RS desk phone is forwarded to the RA on-duty's room phone. The RA on-duty will provide with a lock-out key.
