Before you apply for housing, please review the entire housing application process, below.
Completing an application does not guarantee housing; the application is only the first step to reserving a housing space. A $55 application processing fee is required to complete the housing application. This processing fee is non-refundable.
It is important to note that SF State University Housing communicates with all applicants by email. Please take any steps needed to prevent your spam/bulk filters from blocking housing@sfsu.edu emails.
This can often be done by adding housing@sfsu.edu
to your address book. Consult your email provider for more information.
If you are applying for the ACADEMIC YEAR (Fall and Spring):
Applications are available beginning October 1st. You can apply online by clicking "continue to application" below. The date we receive your $55 application fee is your APPLICATION date. Your application date determines when a License Agreement will be emailed to you. The earlier you apply, the earlier you will receive a License Agreement, which increases your potential for securing housing. Please read below for specifics.
If your application date is between October 1st and November 30th:
Your License Agreement will be emailed to you in the middle of February.
If your application date is between December 1st and January 31st:
Your License Agreement will be emailed to you in the middle of March.
If your application date is between February 1st and March 31st:
Your License Agreement will be emailed to you in the middle of April.
If your application date is between April 1 and April 30:
Your License Agreement will be emailed to you in the beginning of May.
If your application date is after May 1:
Housing is usually full by May 1st. Due to availability, Housing does not automatically send out License Agreements for applications received after May 1. If you apply after May 1, you will need to request a License Agreement in writing by emailing housing@sfsu.edu.
License Agreements are emailed to applicants based on the schedule above. The email will include a link to the License Agreement, the password to the License Agreement, a link to the Terms & Conditions, and a due date. The License Agreement itself is a multiple-page document in which the applicant gives more detailed information to Housing, including room and roommate preference, insurance information and emergency contacts.
License Agreements are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, completing the License Agreement documents, making the initial payment and returning the License Agreement to University Housing as soon as possible will increase your probability of receiving a housing space. The date the License Agreement and initial payment are received is the LICENSE AGREEMENT RECEIVED date. Incomplete License Agreements, or those received without payment, will be returned to the sender.
Provided space availability, approximately 3 weeks after your License Agreement due date, you will receive an email confirming your status as a licensee with University Housing. Your confirmation email will include your Housing area and room type, and your chosen meal plan (if applicable). If you DO NOT receive an email at that time, you may be placed on the Wait list.
Wait list
If housing is full when your License Agreement is received, you may not receive an email until you receive a wait list notification. Wait list notifications are sent twice a week from June through October. If you have not been confirmed by the time the wait list expires, you will be offered the opportunity to change your application to Spring only. Participating in Spring Forward allows you to keep your original application date, though you will be required to complete a new License Agreement (new payment may be required if you have been issued a refund from your Academic Year License Agreement).
Specific space assignment and roommate information will be emailed to the license holder approximately one month prior to Move-In Day. The email will include the assigned building and room number, roommate names and email addresses, and information about Move-In Day.
Applications are available beginning October 1 (the same day as Academic Year applications). You can apply online by clicking "continue to application" below. The date we receive your $55 application fee is your APPLICATION date.
Students who Spring Forward their Academic Year application do not need to reapply for Spring of the same academic year; the original application date is still valid.
All Spring applicants will receive a Spring License Agreement in November.
Spring License Agreements will be emailed to applicants in November. The email will include a link to the License Agreement, the password to the License Agreement, a link to the Terms & Conditions, and a due date.
