How Do I Apply For On-Campus Housing?

At San Francisco State University, on-campus housing is not required and not guaranteed. Applying for a space on campus is a separate process from the University admission. SF State Housing is in high demand and is assigned on a first-come first served basis. We recommend you apply before January 31, 2014, to increase your chances of obtaining a housing space in the fall.

Please note that current residents should NOT apply for 2014-2015 at this time. They will be included in the Returning Resident Process during the Spring semester.

2014-2015 Application Process Schedule

Please note that this tentative schedule is subject to change.

  • October 1, 2013: Application available to new students
  • April 1 - May 1, 2014: Priority License Agreement and Initial Payment period
  • May - June: Students begin receiving space confirmations
  • Late July: Room and roommate assignments sent to confirmed residents
  • Late August: Fall 2014 Move-In Day

 2014-2015 Housing Process Steps

Step 1: Application
Step 2: License Agreement
Step 3: Confirmation
Step 4: Assignment

Step 1: Application

The housing application is available on October 1 through the housing portal.  A $55 housing application processing fee is required. This fee is non-refundable. The date we receive your housing application and application fee is your APPLICATION date.

Step 2: License Agreement

The License Agreement portion of the Portal will be available beginning April 1, 2014. Starting on that date, students can make Housing preferences, begin a roommate profile, sign the Terms & Conditions, and make the initial payment. For initial payment amount and other Housing costs, please see the 2014-2015 Fee Schedule (available in Spring 2014).
License Agreements are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, completing the License Agreement pages and making the initial payment as soon as possible after April 1 will increase your probability of receiving a housing space. The date the License Agreement and initial payment are completed is the LICENSE AGREEMENT RECEIVED date.
The Priority deadline for completing the License Agreement and making the initial payment is May 1, 2014. Students may continue to complete License Agreements after May 1, but it is much more likely that the applicant will start out on the wait list.

Step 3: Confirmation

SF State Housing will confirm applicants for Housing spaces on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority is based on License Agreement Received date AND Housing Application Received date. Students who apply early, and complete the License Agreement and make the initial payment between April 1 and May 1, are generally more likely to receive a space.

SF State Housing will begin to send confirmations via email in May.

Wait list
Please note that it is possible to complete the application and License Agreement relatively early and still be placed on the wait list, as Housing is filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
If housing is full when your License Agreement is completed, you may not receive any response from Housing until you receive a wait list notification.
Wait list notifications are sent twice a week from June through October. If you have not been confirmed by the time the wait list expires, you will be offered the opportunity to change your application to Spring only. Participating in Spring Forward allows you to keep your original application date, though you will be required to complete a new License Agreement (new payment may be required if you have been issued a refund from your Academic Year License Agreement).

Step 4: Assignment

Specific space assignment and roommate information will be emailed to the license holder approximately one month prior to Move-In Day. The email will include the assigned building and room number, roommate names and email addresses, and information about Move-In Day.
