History (back to top)
The Academic Honors and Scholarships Office, established July 2001, was created as a collaboration between Academic Affairs and the Office of Student Financial Aid. The purposes of the new office are to improve awareness of honors and scholarship award opportunities, assist students in competing for these highly competitive national, nomination- and merit-based opportunities, and provide support for honors and scholarship programs sponsored by San Francisco State University.
The office is a clearinghouse for merit-based scholarship information, gathering and dispersing information on sources and schedules for various scholarships and fellowships. The office staff assist a faculty coordinator in offering periodic workshops for students interested in applying for scholarships and maintains a data base of information on students and application materials.
Application/Nomination Process (back to top)
Many awards, especially the large, prestigious national scholarships and fellowships, require an active approach to finding applicants. We coordinate with academic advisors, faculty, and student organizations to identify outstanding students.
Outreach efforts include presentations and updates about scholarships that pertain to students in their respective departments and organizations. We periodically contact faculty for names of students who are outstanding in their academics and/or community involvement.
In addition to offering workshops, the office also assists the faculty coordinator in helping outstanding students compete for large, national scholarships which require nomination. The office helps organize teams of faculty who work closely with students to prepare for the national competitions.
If you are an SFSU student who is interested in scholarship possibilities, check out the links under "Opportunities." If you would like more information and/or would like to be added to our data base of interested students, click on "Contact" to find out how to arrange for an appointment with our scholarship staff. You can also sign up for one of our workshops by clicking on "Workshops."
