Speaker Bios:
James Fadiman, PhD, has been involved with psychedelic research for many years and has done research using these substances in psychotherapeutic, spiritual, and creative problem solving settings. He has taught at San Francisco State, Brandeis, Stanford University and is the co-founder of the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology. As people have continued to use psychedelics even though illegal, he would like them to be used as wisely and fruitfully as possible. To that end he is part of an international effort to develop manuals for safe and effective use. He is the author of ten books and has written a series of films for KQED including: Drugs: the Children are Choosing. He also teaches Sufism, fiction writing and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology and the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology.
Randolph Hencken, MA, is Communication and Marketing Director for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). Randy earned his Master of Arts in Communication from San Diego State University, where his graduate studies focused on drug policy issues. He was the founder and president of the university’s chapter of Students for Sensible Drug Policy, and he interned with the Drug Policy Alliance in San Diego. His thesis investigated how various political attitudes correlate with drug policy beliefs. Formerly he was the program coordinator at the Ibogaine Association of Mexico. Last year he presented at the National Communication Association Conference in Chicago on the topic: “The Folly of the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign”. In his early twenties he was addicted to heroin and cocaine. He states: “That part of my life seems like ancient history now, yet my experience is of great relevance to my interest in drug studies and policy.”
Juliana Van Olphen, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor, in Health Education, San Francisco State University. She earned her doctoral degree in 2000 in Psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and her MPH from the University of California, Los Angeles.
