For assistance with installing and configuring your wireless card or the software and/or drivers for the wireless card, please contact the wireless card's manufacturer or check the manufacturer's website.
For assistance with the steps in this document, please contact the Division of Information Technology's Help Desk.
Requirements
- A PC with built-in wireless technology or a slot where a wireless card (using the 802.11b protocol) can be inserted.
- Software drivers for the wireless card installed.
- Microsoft Windows XP operating system.
- An @sfsu.edu e-mail account.
Quick Access to the SFSU Wireless Network
Microsoft Windows XP combined with newer wireless cards and software drivers are very smart and may only require that you launch a web browser and logon to the network using the web browser.
If you have previously connected to the SFSU wireless network you may see a Windows dialog box appear from the network status icon
on the taskbar indicating the computer is connected to SFSU and the signal strength. (See image below).

If the Wireless Network Connection dialog box indicates you are connected to SFSU, launch a web browser and logon as specified in STEP 3:Logging onto the Wireless Network of this document.
If you can not connect using this method (or do not see the message above) follow the steps below.
STEP 1: Detecting the Wireless Network
- When an SFSU wireless network is detected, a Windows dialog box should automatically appear from the network status icon and report that there are one or more wireless networks available. (See image below).

Select View Available Wireless Networks from the pop up menu.
STEP 2: Selecting a Wireless Network
- Select SFSU from the list of available wireless networks.
- Check the box that states "Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it is not secure."
(Later, when you logon, security will be handled by an SSL encrypted webpage).- Click on the Connect button.
- A Wireless Network Connection Status dialog box may appear and inform you of your connection and the quality of the connection's signal.
If the dialog box above does not appear and you want to see the Wireless Network Connection status, left-click on the network status icon
located on the Windows taskbar.
STEP 3: Logging onto the Wireless Network
- Open a Web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
- Attempt to connect to any web site on the Internet.
The Web browser will be redirected to a secure Web page that will prompt for your @sfsu.edu username and password.

- Enter your @sfsu.edu e-mail account name and password in the fields provided.
Your account name will be the first part of your e-mail address (everything before the @ symbol).
Your password will be the same as your e-mail password.- After entering this information, click the Logon User button.
At this point your Web browser should go to the site that you initially tried to access. Also, a pop up window will appear stating the time that you will need to login again. Currently, each login allows two hours of wireless access. After that time expires, you will need to login again.
Logging Off
When you are finished with your wireless session be sure to logoff. If you do not logoff your account will stay logged in for two hours and you will not be able to logon from another machine.
To logoff, click on the Logoff button on the Vernier Logoff Page Pop-Up window.
If you do not see the logoff Pop-Up window, see the Problems? section.
Problems?
- I do not see the Vernier Logoff Page
Your web browser may be set to block Pop-Up Windows. Reconfigure your web browser not to block Pop-Up Windows before you logon to the SFSU wireless network.
