Connecting from Windows Vista to a MS LAN Share
- Log into Windows using your LAN domain account.
- Click on Start then Computer to open computer.
- Press and release the Alt key to display menus.
- Select Map network drive on the Tools menu to open a Map network drive window.
- Select a drive letter for the connection.
- In the Folder: field
- Enter the folder path as follows: \\server name\share name.
e.g. \\adm3.sfsu.edu\ujdoe (adm3.sfsu.edu = server name and ujdoe = share name)- In some cases you will need to use the server's IP number instead of its name.
e.g., \\130.212.50.223\ujdoe instead of \\adm3.sfsu.edu\ujdoe
- You can choose to automatically reconnect every time you log on by selecting the Reconnect at logon Check Box.
- While less secure, it is possible to connect to a LAN share without being logged into Windows using a LAN account. If you are not logged into Windows using a LAN account.
- Click on different user name link to open the Connect As dialog box.
- Enter the user name as follows Account Name @domain.sfsu.edu
e.g. jdoe@ccs.sfsu.edu ( jdoe = your account name and ccs = domain)- Click OK
- Click Finish
A Windows Explorer page should open showing you the contents of the shared drive.
Connecting from Windows XP to a MS LAN Share
- Log into Windows using your LAN domain account.
- Click on Start then My Computer to open my computer.
- Select Map Network Drive on the Tools menu to open a Map Network Drive window.
- Select a drive letter for the connection.
- In the Folder: field

Opening a Share after Connecting
When connected to a share, a network icon is displayed in My Computer. Double click on it to gain access to your shared drive.
If you didn't choose to automatically reconnect to the share at log on, you can make a shortcut on your desktop to simplify reconnecting.
- Right Click on the share name in My Computer and select Create Shortcut.
- When asked if you want a shortcut to be placed on your desktop, select Yes.
TOP OF PAGEDouble clicking on the shortcut to the share will create a connection if one doesn't exist and open the share in Windows Explorer.
Disconnecting
To disconnect the share, right click on the share in My Computer then select Disconnect.
