About VirusScan for Mac 9
McAfee VirusScan for Mac 9, is also known as McAfee Security 1.0. It has an enhanced graphical user interface and protects your Mac from malware. VirusScan for Mac 9 scans files, folders, local or network mounted volumes, and other items for malware or potentially unwanted code and notifies you in case of malware detections. Scanning takes place every time you create or access an item. You can also schedule scans to run immediately, at a particular time, or at regular intervals.

Downloading VirusScan for Mac 9
Download the Mac OS X disk image file version of the VirusScan for Mac 9 installer using Firefox, or aother Web browser.
Note:
Do not use Safari to download the file, because it will respond with a permissions error during the attempt.
To download VirusScan for Mac 9, perform the following steps:
- Start a Web browser (e.g., Firefox or Chrome).
- Go to the Anti-Virus Information Web page at: http://www.sfsu.edu/~doit/helpdesk/av.htm#virusscan-mac
- Click on the button labeled, Download VirusScan for Mac 9 under the Mac OS X 10.6.x platform in the table. and under the Download column. The SF State Download Software Web page will open, displaying Software Download for VirusScan for Mac 9.
- Enter your SF State identification number and password in the appropriate fields.
- Select Yes or No appropriately, in the pull-down menu in response to the prompt, Will this software be installed on a state-owned computer?
- Click on the Login button. The
dialog box, Opening vscan-mac9.dmg will be displayed providing the options Open with and Save File.
- Click in the Save File radio button then click OK. The process to download the Mac OS X disk image file, vscan-mac9.dmg to your
computer will begin. Upon completion, the file, vscan-mac9.dmg,
will be save onto your computer. That file contains the VirusScan for Mac 9 Macintosh installer package, McAfee Security for Mac-Anti-malware-1.0-RTW-676.mpkg.
Downloading the Mandatory Hotfix for VirusScan for Mac 9
The Mandatory Hotfix for VirusScan for Mac 9 contains an installer for resolving the following issues:
- Hotfix or Patch versions do not appear for the Anti-malware component in the System Properties page of ePolicy Orchestrator.
- On-access scanning does not function after upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard 64-bit operating system.
Download the Mac OS X disk image file version of the Mandatory Hotfix for VirusScan for Mac 9.
Note:

To download the Mandatory Hotfix disk image file, perform the following steps:
- Start a Web browser (e.g., Firefox or Chrome) and go to the VirusScan for Mac 9 section of the Anti-Virus Information Web page at:
http://www.sfsu.edu/~doit/helpdesk/av.htm#virusscan-mac - Click on the button labeled, Download Mandatory Hotfix for VirusScan for Mac 9 under the Mac OS X 10.6.x platform in the table and under the Download column. The SF State Download Software Web page will open.
- Enter your SF State identification number in the SF State ID field.
- Enter your password in the SF State Password field.
- Select Yes or No, appropriately in the pull-down menu in response to the prompt, Will this software be installed on a state-owned computer?
- Click on the Login button. The
process to download the Mac OS X disk image file, vscan-mac9-hotfix.dmg to your
computer will begin. Upon completion, the file, vscan-mac9-hotfix.dmg,
will be save onto your computer. This file contains the Macintosh installer package, McAfee Security for Mac-Anti-malware-1.0-819-HF529390.mpkg.
Installing VirusScan for Mac 9
NOTE:
While installing VirusScan for Mac 9, if you have an earlier version of VirusScan for Mac (or Virex) installed on your computer, it will be overwritten. To install VirusScan for Mac 9, perform the following steps:
- Double click on the disk image file, vscan-mac9.dmg,
to display the Macintosh installer package file, McAfee Security for Mac-Anti-maleware-1.0-RTW-676.mpkg. - Double click on the file, McAfee Security for Mac-Anti-maleware-1.0-RTW-676.mpkg to un-pack the application.
- Click the Continue button to determine if the software can be installed on the machine.
- Click the Continue button to begin the installation process.
- Click Continue again after reviewing the System Requirements and Known Issues.
- Read the End User License Agreement then click Continue.

- Click Agree to accept the Software License Agreement.
- Click Continue to accept the default location for the Quarantine Folder.
- Click Install to continue.
- Type the password and click OK..
- Installation will begin automatically.
- The Installation was completed successfully will be the last screen. Click Close to complete the installation.
Updating the Virus Definition (DAT) File
Every month, hundreds of new viruses appear, so you should ensure that your computer is always protected by keeping your anti-virus software up to date. McAfee regularly develops an updated virus definition (DAT) file and makes it available on the McAfee Web site for users to download to combat new virus threats as they emerge. Each DAT file brings new detection and cleaning capabilities to VirusScan for Mac 9.
By default,VirusScan for Mac 9 is set up to automatically check the McAfee Website for an updated DAT file everyday. If one is available, it will be downloaded and installed automatically.
Installing the Mandatory Hotfix for VirusScan for Mac 9
To install the Mandatory Hotfix, perform the following steps:
- Double click on the Mac OS X disk image file, vscan-mac9-hotfix.dmg to mount the disk image. Once mounted, the resulting installer package is named McAfee Security for Mac-Anti-malware-1.0-819-HF529390.mpkg.
- Double click on the Macintosh installer package file, McAfee Security for Mac-Anti-malware-1.0-819-HF529390.mpkg to un-pack the application.
- Click Continue button to determine if the software can be installed.

- Click Continue button to install the hotfix.

- Read the information about the release and click Continue.

- Read the End User License Agreement and click Continue.

- Click Agree to agree to Software License Agreement terms.

- Click Install to perform a standard install of the hotfix.

- Type the password and click OK.

- When prompted that the installation was successful, click Close.


Scanning Your Computer for Viruses
By default, the VirusScan for Mac 9 On-access Scanning setting is enabled and scanning takes place every time you create or access an item. When a virus is found, the primary action is Clean. If that action fails then the item is Quarantined.
On-demand Scanning is available. You may manually scan items of your choice, including archives and compressed files, and Apple Mail messages. To do an on-demand scan, perform the following steps:
- Startup the VirusScan for Mac 9 program.
The VirusScan for Mac 9 Dashboard window will open.
- Click Scan Now under ACTIVITY in the left-hand column. The Scan Now window will be displayed.
- You may select the item to be scanned by using the drop-down menu under the What to scan section. The default location is the current account's Home directory. Alternatively, you may drag and drop the item to be scanned in this section of the window.
- Click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

- When the scan is completed, a summary will be displayed with the number of threats detected and the number of items scanned.
