Popup Blockers
Introduction
Popup windows are being used frequently by advertisers as well as malicious web sites and spyware. Many programs claiming to prevent popup windows are bogus and will purposely generate more popup windows. Check Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites for some of these bogus popup removal programs.
For certain web sites you may not want to block pop up windows. Logging into the SFSU Wireless network will create a pop up window. This pop up window will allow you to log off the wireless network. Most web browsers or pop up toolbar blockers give you options for allowing popup's on certain web sites.
How to Prevent Popup Windows
Windows XP - Install Service Pack 2. This adds a popup blocker in the Internet Explorer web browser.
Other Windows Systems - Install the Google Toolbar. The toolbar has the ability to block pop up windows reliably.
Mac OS X 10.2 or greater - Use the Safari web browser. Safari includes the ability to block pop up windows.
Any OS - Use an alternate web browser (Mozilla, Firefox) that has the ability to block pop up windows.
If your machine exhibits an unusual amount of pop up windows the machine may be infected with spyware/malware. Visit our Detect and Remove Spyware site for detection and removal instructions.
