About @mail
- You must reset your password before accessing your @mail account.
- Each @mail account offers 10 GB of e-mail storage.
- @mail accounts have the e-mail address @mail.sfsu.edu.
- @mail accounts can be setup to forward e-mail to another account.
About the @mail transition
- Students who forward e-mail will continue to have e-mail forwarded
- Student e-mail addresses have changed from @sfsu.edu to @mail.sfsu.edu
- Stored e-mail, contacts and calendar events will not be moved to @mail
- To assist with the transition, messages sent to student e-mail addresses @sfsu.edu will be temporarily forwarded to @mail.sfsu.edu addresses until the end of December 2010. After that time, messages addressed to @sfsu.edu will be returned to the sender.
- Faculty and staff e-mail addresses have not changed.

Reset my password
- Go to the SF State Authentication page.
- Enter your SF State ID.
- Enter your existing SF State password at 'SF State Password/Reset Code'.
- Click Login.
- Click Change Password.
- Enter your new password twice. (You may use your existing password but it is strongly recommended you change it to enhance security.)
- Click Next. If your passwords do not match or meet complexity requirements, try again.
- Click Logout.
This will change your SF State password which is used by @mail. It is not recommended to use the @mail Options > Change your password feature as it will only change your @mail password.
Web login
- First time users must reset their password before accessing their @mail account.
- If you have a Microsoft Live or Hotmail account you must be logged out of it.
- Navigate to http://live.sfsu.edu
- Enter your full e-mail address (e.g., jdoe@mail.sfsu.edu) or SF State ID number.
- Enter your SF State password.
- Click Sign in.

Using an e-mail client
- Information about how to setup e-mail programs and mobile devices is available after signing in to live.sfsu.edu:
- First time users must reset their password before accessing their @mail account.
- Sign in at http://live.sfsu.edu.
- From the mail view, select Options.
- Select Connect Outlook to This Account.
- If you are using Outlook, follow the instructions on the page. Otherwise, select Access Your Account Using IMAP or POP E-Mail Programs and follow the instructions provided.
Using an iPod/iPhone/iPad
- On the device, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts and Calendars.
- Select Add Account.
- Select Microsoft Exchange.
- Complete the following fields:
- E-mail: Your full e-mail address (e.g., janedoe@mail.sfsu.edu).
- Username: Your full e-mail address (e.g., janedoe@mail.sfsu.edu).
- Password: Your e-mail password.
- Click Next.
- Select Continue if prompted for server verification.
- If the Server field appears blank, enter m.outlook.com.
- Click Next.
- Select the items you would like to sync by turning the Mail, Contacts and Calendar items on/off.
- Click Save.
Forward @mail e-mail to another address
E-mail can be forwarded to any e-mail address by signing in to @mail.
- Sign in at http://live.sfsu.edu.
- From the mail view, select Options > See All Options....
- Select Forward your e-mail.
- Enter the address you want to forward your e-mail to in the Forward my email to: field. It may be necessary to scroll down the page to see it.
- Verify the Keep a copy of forwarded messages in Outlook Web App checkbox is unchecked.
- Click on Start Forwarding.
- To return from the Options page to the mail view click on My Mail
- Test by sending a message to your @mail.sfsu.edu address. It is best to not send the test message from the account you are forwarding to. Some mail services, e.g., Gmail, will not show the forwarded message if the message was sent from the same account it is forwarded to.
*Note: Your e-mail account provides 10GB of storage. It is not recommended that you leave a copy of your messages on the local server if you choose to forward your e-mail (e.g., Do not check 'Keep a copy of forwarded messages in Outlook Web App').

How long can I keep my @mail account?
@mail accounts may be available to alumni in the future.
Will faculty and staff have @mail accounts?
Faculty and staff @mail accounts will be established after the initial student e-mail account cut over.
Make changes to @mail accounts
How do I change the name displayed in the e-mail directory?
To change the first and middle names displayed in the e-mail directory visit: www.sfsu.edu/email. To change your last name contact Student Services (students) or Human Resources (staff and faculty).
How do I change my account name?
Account names are not customarily changed. For exceptions contact the DoIT Help Desk to open a ticket requesting your account name be changed.
How do I request my account be closed?
The Registrar's Office requires that all current SF State students have an SF State e-mail account. For all others, contact the DoIT Help Desk to open a ticket requesting your account be closed.
Using @mail light
If you have low vision and use a screen reader or high contrast settings, you can select the blind and low vision experience to optimize viewing. This setting can be set as the default the first time you login. If you need to change the setting after your first login:
- Sign in.
- Select Options.
- Select Settings and then the General tab.
- In the 'Accessibility' section, check or uncheck Use the blind and low vision experience.
Account Limits
Microsoft’s Live@edu service has a number of documented limits that, when exceeded, will result in account suspension for 24 hours. This feature is intended to limit the impact of e-mail abuse.
Recipient limit: The maximum number of message recipients allowed in the To:, Cc:, and Bcc: fields. A public group is counted as a single recipient: 100 recipients
Message rate limit: The maximum number of e-mail messages that can be sent from a single Outlook Live e-mail client per minute. The client is identified by its IP address: 30 message per minute
Recipient rate limit: The maximum number of recipients that can receive e-mail messages sent from a single Outlook Live e-mail account per day: 500 recipients per day
Troubleshooting

Turn conversation mode on/off
- Sign in to @mail.
- Find the text 'Arrange by:' and click the blue / link word next to it (e.g., Date, From, To, Size, Subject, etc.).
- At the bottom of the pop-up list, check or uncheck Conversation.
Change the time zone
- Sign in to @mail.
- From your Inbox click Options.
- Select Settings > Regional.
- Change the date/time for the appropriate time zone.
- Click Save.

Mailbox is over quota
If your mailbox reports that it is over quota, follow the instructions for Checking e-mail Using an e-mail client to set up a third party e-mail program such as Outlook, Mac Mail or Thunderbird. Use the third party program to delete or move messages from your account.
Log in if I already have a Windows Live or Hotmail account
- Make certain you are logged out of your non-SF State Windows Live or Hotmail account.
- Sign in at http://live.sfsu.edu using your SF State ID number or e-mail address (e.g., jdoe@mail.sfsu.edu) and password.
- If the login is set to store your ID, click Sign in with a different Windows Live ID to enter a different one.
