How to Recover an Archived Oversized Mailbox

These directions are intended to assist in the recovery of oversized E-mail.  E-mail is put into the oversized directory after your inbox on the SFSU server has grown to more than the allowed quota. The E-mail quota varies.  Please set aside a sufficient amount of time to recover your oversized mail.  It may take more than an hour to recover an oversized inbox.  The more E-mail that you have accrued, the longer the process may take.

These instructions assume that you have a minimal knowledge of the programs telnet and Pine.  View the documents on the links below for more information on using telnet and Pine.

  1. Open a telnet application and login to apollo.sfsu.edu
If you need help using telnet, help is available at http://www.sfsu.edu/~helpdesk/docs/internet/telnet.htm

  2. At the prompt, type: oversize
The computer will take you into the UNIX mail program Pine (it may take a while because of the large size of the files).
For more assistance on how to use Pine view http://www.sfsu.edu/~helpdesk/docs/using/upine.htm
Pine does not make use of devices such as a mouse.  The entire program is controlled by the keyboard.  To mark a message for deletion, scroll down using the arrow keys and press the “d” key beside the highlighted messages you wish to delete.
After you have selected all of the messages you wish to delete, press the “x” key to expunge (remove) the messages marked for deletion.
To quit pine, press the “q” key.

  3. You must delete and expunge all unwanted/overly large messages.  The previous mailbox and current mailbox must be under 8000000 bytes (8 megabytes).  If you do not reduce your total mail to under 8000000 bytes (8 megabytes), the script will return to the beginning of the process until you have successfully reduced your mailbox size.
When you have finished deleting email in Pine, press “q” to quit.  If you have reduced your email boxes to under 8000000 bytes, the oversize program should inform you of your success.  If you quit the program and there is no confirmation that the emailbox was reduced, and you are brought back to the UNIX prompt (such as apollo% ), please type pine at the prompt and check to see if your old email box is restored.
