  2. A 9600-baud or higher speed modem with hardware based error correction. (57,600 baud V.90 modems recommended for best performance).
  3. A computer running Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional. (The Microsoft Windows operating system CD and/or your computer's installation/recovery CD may be required).
  4. Print out these instructions to use during the configuration setup.
Brief Overview
This document provides instructions for establishing dial-up Internet access through your SFSU Internet account to the SFSU modem pool. The Microsoft Windows XP operating system is designed with Internet functionality in mind and includes the Internet Explorer web browser, Outlook Express email application as well as other Internet applications such as Telnet. Once you have successfully obtained dial-up access to SFSU, you can use the Internet Explorer web browser to download other Internet applications such as Eudora, Firefox, and/or Netscape, etc. If you encounter problems, please read the Problems? section at the end of this document.

Verifying Dial-up Internet Access to SFSU (Optional, recommended for first time users and for Troubleshooting Problems)

There are numerous factors that can go wrong and prevent valid dial-up access to SFSU including excessive static in the phone line. After receiving the 'Connected message,' verify data is being sent and received correctly by performing the following:
  1. Click on the Start button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A Command Prompt window will open
    .
  2. Type: ping apollo.sfsu.edu then press the 'enter/return' key on your keyboard.
  3. If the window displays information information about packets being sent and received your dial-up connection is working properly. If you see 'Connection timed out' (or if the window remains blank for a long period of time), you do not have a valid dial-up connection and you should go through the Problems? section of this document to resolve the problem.

Downloading Internet Applications

The Windows operating system includes a web browser - Internet Explorer Internet Explorer Icon. Assuming you have successfully configured your PC for dial-up access to SFSU, you will be able to use this browser to access the world wide web. You may desire other Internet application software such as Eudora (to check email), etc. The Division of Information Technology maintains a web site that contains many shareware/freeware and licensed software available for download. The instructions below provide you information on using Internet Explorer to download other applications to your PC from the SFSU Division of Information Technology Helpdesk web site.

To download one of the applications to your home PC:

  1. If you have not done so already, dial in to SFSU and verify the connection (see sections above for details).
  2. Open Internet Explorer by clicking on the Start button, selecting; All Programs > Internet Explorer Icon

  3. On the Internet Explorer menu bar, select File > Open from the drop down menu. In the open field, type: http://www.sfsu.edu/~doit/helpdes/wdevapp.htm then click OK.
  4. Assuming your modem is connected to SFSU, Internet Explorer should have loaded a web page called Windows Applications and Utilities. To see what software applications are available for download, you can scroll down the web page using the scroll bar.
  5. Use the mouse to double-click on the filename of the application you wish to download. For instance, if you wish to download Eudora, place your mouse over the words Eudora and then double-click the mouse button.
  6. After clicking on one of the filenames, a File Download window will open and prompt you to 'save the program to disk.' Click Save.
    File download window
  7. A Save As window will open and prompt you to save the file. Make sure the 'Save In' area specifies Desktop (see picture below). If the 'Save In' area does not specify 'Desktop,' click the small downward arrow and select 'Desktop ' from the menu. Then click Save.Save As Window
  8. Please be patient and wait until the window indicates that the file has completely downloaded to your PC (speed of download may vary depending on the speed of modem, line noise in the phone line, traffic on Internet, etc.). If you are downloading a very large file such as Netscape Communicator you may want to leave your computer running and take a long (1-2 hour) break.

  9. Once the file is downloaded to your PC, you will be able to select Close. The File Download window will disappear if you have selected "Close this dialog box when download completes". Otherwise click the Close button. If the download was successful, double-click on the file to begin the setup installation process of the program you have downloaded.

  1. If you receive an error message or the installation program for any of these software packages does not run, use Internet Explorer to download the file again. Sometimes a file transfer does not complete, especially in the afternoon or evening when our systems are heavily used. Occasionally your connection might spontaneously be dropped. Try disconnecting your Dial-Up Networking connection and re-establishing it. Follow the instructions in the Verifying Dial-up Internet Access to SFSU section above before attempting to download any program.

Setting Up Programs that are Downloaded

If you have not downloaded any programs, you can skip this section.

  1. Locate the downloaded installation file. If you downloaded any of the programs from the Windows Applications and Utilities web page, you will have installation icons for these files on your Windows desktop. (If you did not download the file to the Windows Desktop use Windows Explorer to locate the file.
  2. Installing most of these programs involves double clicking on the installation icon. This normally launches the installation setup process. For instance if you downloaded Eudora and double-clicked on the Eudora51.exe file Eudora installation icon, you should see a setup installation screen .
  3. Most people should accept the default installation values when prompted during setup. If you need more setup information, you can use Internet Explorer to read the various software setup information contained in the Helpdesk Windows Applications and Utilities html document located at  http://www.sfsu.edu/~doit/helpdesk/wdevapp.htm Once there, look at the Instructions and Notes section for information on the software applications you want to install. For instance if you have downloaded Eudora and need to find out how to configure the settings properly, you will find the instructions there. Print out any instructions you feel you need for programs you are going to download and install.
  4. Once you have finished installing the particular application, you can discard the installation file by dragging it to the Windows Recycle bin Recycle bin icon located on the Windows Desktop.

A Typical Dial-Up Procedure to the SFSU Modem Pool

Other Considerations for Customizing Your Internet Experience

    Configuring Windows Default Internet Applications
You can configure default settings for Internet applications by using Windows Internet Options. Use this to set the Internet Explorer home page and to configure the default phone number to dial (if you have more than one Internet Service Provider or have more than one Dial-up icon). Also use this to set the default email application (Eudora, Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express) on your system.

  1. Click on the Start button, select Settings > Control Panel Icon image.
  2. Click on the Network and Internet Connections icon. Internet Options
  3. Select Internet Options.
  4. Type in the default homepage you want Internet Explorer to open in the Address field. For example, if you want to have Internet Explorer open to the SFSU homepage enter http://www.sfsu.edu
  5. Click on the Connections tab.
  6. In the Dial-Up settings window select the dial-up configuration (phone number) that will be used as your default dial in settings then click on the Set Default button. (This is useful if you have more than one phone number listed or used more than one ISP).
  7. If you want your computer to automatically dial the default phone number when you launch and Internet application (such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, Eudora) then check the radio button next to the words Dial whenever a network connection is not present. Do not check this button if you do not want this feature.
  8. Click on the Programs tab.
  9. In the E-mail field select the email application that you normally use. For instance, if Eudora is your email application select it from the drop down list. (Note: Eudora must first be installed for it to appear on the list).
  10. If you use a Calendar program such as Microsoft Outlook select the appropriate Calendar program from the Calendar field.
  11. If you use a Contact List with a program such as Microsoft Outlook select the appropriate contact list program from the Contact List field.
  12. Click the OK button when finished to save your settings.

Problems?

The login process fails...
Log into your Internet account using a terminal program such as Windows HyperTerminal (alternately, use a telnet program on a computer in one of the campus computer labs). Check to make sure that your SFSU account still exists and that your password is correct. An exclamation point, a period or a space in your password may cause problems. If you are currently using one of these characters, you need to change your password. Also, do not add @sfsu.edu to your Internet account name in the 'Connect To' window when prompted for your 'User Name' otherwise the login connection procedure will fail.
