SFSU Dial-up Internet Access for Macintosh OS X
Before you begin, obtain the following:
- An SFSU Internet Account.
- A Modem with a baud rate of 9,600 baud or higher.
- An Apple Macintosh computer running Mac operating System 10.1 or greater.
Configuring SFSU Dial-up Internet Access with Mac OS X
First review the entire configuration procedure. As you complete each step, check the box to the left of the instructions. If you see error messages during the installation, write them down and note which step you were on when they appeared. If you encounter problems check the Problems? section at the end of this document.
Using the Internet Connect Wizard to create an SFSU Dial-up Profile
Double-click the Macintosh hard drive icon
on the desktop.
Double-click the Applications folder
Double-click the Internet Connect icon
to begin the dial-up configuration process.
If you are running Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar" - the Internet Connect icon is yellow and black,
in Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" & 10.3 "Panther" - the Internet Connect icon is purple.
In the Internal Modem window verify that the correct modem is selected in the Configuration field.
Click on the Edit button.

In the Network window verify that the Show field is set to Internal Modem.
Next to the Location field, select New Location....

A new window appears that prompts you to name the location. The default location is called untitled1.
Change the Location name to one of the following:
SFSU 405-4200 if you are a student
SFSU 405-4000 if you are a faculty
Select the TCP/IP Tab..... Next to the Configure field select Using PPP

Click on the PPP tab.
In the Service Provider field type: SFSU
In the Telephone Number field enter one of the following numbers:
405 - 4200 if you are a student.
405 - 4000 if you are faculty.
*There is a two hour time limit on the 405-4200 and 405-4000 modem lines.
In the Account Name field enter your " SFSU login ID." (Do NOT include @sfsu.edu in the Account Name field).
In the Password field enter " your SFSU password "
If do not want to be prompted for your password every time you connect check the Save Password box.

Click the Apply Now button and close the Network window.
When you close the Network window, the Internal Modem Window appears. Verify that the correct telephone number is selected, your SFSU Login ID is correct, and the password is correct.
Check the Show modem status in menu bar box.
Click the Connect button to connect to the Internet. If you are successful you should see "Connected" in the Status area.
Using Internet Software
Once you have successfully established a dial-up connection with Internet Connect
, you can use your Internet application(s).
Examples of software you can use includes web browsers (ie. Safari, Firefox
, Netscape
), email clients (ie. Eudora
, Apple Mail
, Thunderbird
, MS Entourage
), SFTP clients (ie Fetch
) and SSH/Telnet clients (ie Terminal
). Some of these applications may already be installed in your Macintosh; others can be installed if desired.

A Typical Dial-up Session Procedure
Opening an Internet Connection
You should always manually connect to the Internet before attempting to use Internet applications.
- Click on the Apple Menu icon
, select Location, then select the appropriate dial-up connection if it is not already checked.
If you connect to the same Location every time you can skip this step.
- Click on the phone icon
on the task bar and select Connect from the drop down menu.

- Wait until you hear the modem dial and see a window dialog indicating that you are connected.
- Launch your Internet applications (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Eudora, etc.).
Closing an Internet Connection
You should always disconnect from the Internet when done using your Internet connection.
- Close your Internet applications (Safari, Firefox, Eudora, etc.).
- Click on the phone icon
and select Disconnect from the drop down menu.

Problems?
If you can't modify any Network settings such as setting the active port for the Internal modem or configuring TCP/IP...
Your Macintosh login username probably does not have Administrator privileges. For instance if you make a change in the Network windows and the 'Apply Now' button stays gray this typically indicates that your Macintosh account doesn't have Administrator privileges. To correct this, log out of your Macintosh and log into the system with an account that had Administrative privileges or have the Administrator of your Macintosh log in and give your Macintosh account Administrative privileges then follow the instructions from the beginning of this document to configure your system for dial-up access. (Note: On new machines the first Macintosh account created automatically has Administrative priviledges).When dialing out I still cannot connect successfully...
Click on the phone iconon the Apple menu bar.
Verify that there is a check next to Internal Modem on the drop down menu.
Select Open Internet Connect from thedrop down menu.
Verify your SFSU login name and password are spelled correctly . Do not add @sfsu.edu to the login name.
Check the phone number and other settings and make sure they are consistent with this document.I can only browse sites at SFSU, can't connect to web sites off campus...
Hard code the domain name servers 130.212.10.163 and 130.212.10.162 in the TCP/IP settings. Also add sfsu.edu to the Search domains field in the TCP/IP settings.
The modem attempts to connect but constantly drops during the handshake process ...
Try dropping the modem protocol in System Preferences > Network > Modem from v.90 or v.92 to v.34 or v.32. We have found certain models of Macintosh modems have difficulty connecting reliably. If your machine can't find the modem select and configuring the Modem as an Active Port...

You can submit a problem to SFSU's Help Desk by clicking on the link to submit a 'Helpdesk Service Request.'
The first steps are to make sure the Modem is active and recognized by the operating system in the Network Preferences. Most examples and images in this document refer to the typical standard 56K Apple built-in modem. If you are not using the built-in Apple modem some dialog windows will appear slightly different.
Click on the Apple menu icon
select Location and then select Network Preferences.

Next to the Show: field select Internal modem from the drop down menu.
If Internal modem is not viewable in the Show: field drop down menu do the following:
- Select Active Ports from the Show: drop down menu.Check the box next to Internal Modem.Click the Apply Now button.
- In the Show: field select Internal modem.
Click on the Apply Now button if you have make a change.
Click on the Modem tab and select the type of modem you are using. For most setups this will be the Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90)
Check the Show modem status in menu bar box. A little phone will appear on the top right of the Apple menu bar.

Click the Apply Now button to save your changes.
Close the Network window.
The modem should now be configured and active.
