Installing and Configuring Eudora 5.1.1 on a Macintosh OS X system
![]()
Before you begin make sure you have the following:
- An SFSU Internet account (available to SFSU students, staff and faculty only).
- On-campus computers should be connected to the SFSU network via an ethernet connection.
Off-campus users should have their computers configured for Internet access to SFSU via a modem and/or cable modem or DSL service. If your mac is not configured for SFSU dial-up modem access yet, use a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer to view the Macintosh Internet Access web page at http://www.sfsu.edu/~helpdesk/access/kits/macdsk.htm- This document assumes you have already downloaded a copy of Eudora to your Macintosh and only need the configuration settings. If you do not yet have a copy of Eudora, use your web browser to download a copy from http://www.sfsu.edu/~doit/helpdesk/mdevapp.htm or directly from http://www.eudora.com
- Macintosh OS X or greater installed on your computer.
About Eudora
Eudora is a graphical E-mail application that can be used from both home and on-campus computers. The current version of Eudora 5.1.1 for OS X runs in three modes - sponsored mode, light mode and paid mode. (More information regarding these modes is provided below). If using Eudora from an on-campus lab please check with the lab attendent for more explicit information.Upgrading Eudora from OS 9 to OS X can be a bit tricky - if you are in this situation we recommend reading through this document to understand the entire process first. Then go back and follow the instructions to upgrade.
IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ IF UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION!
Upgrading from a Previous Version of Eudora that was installed under OS 8 or OS 9?
In OS 7-9.x installations of Eudora created two folders - a 'Eudora' folder located in the System Folder and a Eudora Applications folder typically located in your Applications folder on the hard drive. Your Eudora settings file, mailboxes and address book are located in the Eudora folder in the System folder under Mac OS 7.x-9.x. The main Eudora E-mail application and help files are typically installed in the Eudora Applications folder on the hard drive.
Recommended Method of Upgrade
If you do not want to keep your Eudora settings files, mailboxes, and addressbook in your OS 7-9 System Folder (we recommend that you do not keep your Eudora files there) manually move the Eudora Folder from the OS 9 System Folder to your Documents Folder located in your Home Folder in OS X. (This assumes you will strictly be working in OS X to check mail. If you will be switching back and forth between OS 9 & OS X to check mail then leave your Eudora Folder in the OS 9 System Folder). Install the regular Eudora program into the Applications folder.Fresh Installations of Eudora (when no previous version of Eudora has been installed under any version of the Operating System)
A new fresh installation of Eudora for OS X will create two Eudora folders:
- The Eudora Application Folder contains the main Eudora application
and help files.
This folder will be installed into the Applications folderby default unless you select a different location.
Click on the Finderthen click on the Applications button
. You should see the
.
- The Eudora Folder contains your configuration settings (E-mail address, mail server settings, etc.) , mailboxes and addressbook.
This folder will be located in the Documents folder within your Home folder by default for brand new installations.
Click on the Finderthen click on the Home button
and click on the Documents folder
. You should see the
.
Installation Procedure
We recommend logging into Mac OS X with an account that has administrator privileges. Alternatively, if you want the application to be visible for only one particular user (if the machine is set up for multiple users) log onto the machine with the user account of the person of who will be using Eudora.
Quit any applications currently running.
Double-click on the Eudora installation icon
to start the installation program. Click continue to display the Eudora Read Me window. Review the contents and click Continue to display the license agreement.
Review the license agreement and click on the Agree button if you agree.
At the ' Eudora 5.1.1 OSX Install' dialog window we recommend you select 'Custom Install' from the drop down menu.
If installing Eudora for the first time highlight 'Install Eudora for the first time.'
To update an existing install of Eudora (merge the new files into an existing install) highlight 'Update an existing version to 5.1.1 for OS X.' (If upgrading please read the recommendations above before beginning this process). At the Install Eudora here dialog window we recommend you accept the default location of the OS X Applications folder
and click on the Choose button.
If installing Eudora specifically for one user only in a multiuser environment (to have the application invisible to other users of the same machine) choose to install to your Home folder.Configuration
- Locate the Eudora application. By default this should be in the Applications folder
.
- Launch Eudora by double-clicking on the Eudora icon.
The very first time you launch Eudora 5.1.1 you may be prompted to use the system keychain to store your password. We recommend you select 'Yes' if your machine is set up for logon upon bootup and/or if you feel secure having the system save your password. Otherwise select 'No.'- You will be asked if you wish to import settings and mail from another email application. In most cases you will select 'No' unless you want to import from a different email program such as Outlook Express, Entourage, etc.
- The Settings dialog window should automatically open and prompt you for information. If it does not automatically open click on Special and select Settings from the Eudora menu bar.
- Select the Getting Started category on the left hand side and manually enter the appropriate information.
Enter your SFSU account name in the Username field.
Enter sfsu.edu in the Mail Server field.
Enter your real name in the Real Name field.
Enter sfsu.edu in the SMTP Server field if on campus or dialing directly into the SFSU modem pool.
If you use a commercial ISP such as Pacbell, Earthlink, use their SMTP server.
- Select the Checking Mail category on the left hand side and and manually enter the appropriate information.
Check the Save password box if you want Eudora to remember your password.
In the Mail Management section decide if you want your e-mail left on the server.
(Note: All SFSU accounts have an 10 megabyte limit for the inbox left on the SFSU server. Normally, when mail left on the server exceeds 1.5 megabytes you may begin to experience problems downloading your e-mail - especially if you are using a slow speed modem. It is in your best interest to keep mail left on the server to a minimum to prevent problems).
If you will be checking mail from multiple locations (both home and office) with Eudora, check the box next to
'Leave mail on Server.' Type in the number of days you wish the mail to remain on the SFSU server
(we recommend no longer than 14 in most cases)
We recommend checking the box next to 'Delete from server when emptied from Trash.'
If you are only checking mail from one machine (such as your work pc) you may want to leave the 'Leave mail on server' option unchecked. Use your best judgement in deciding which options to select. If you receive an enormous amount of mail frequently and have a need to check your mail from both home and work you may want to cut down on the number of days left on the server to prevent problems. If you have questions it may be best to ask to speak to a computer consultant.- Select the Sending Mail category on the left hand side and and manually enter the appropriate information.
Type sfsu.edu in the Default Domain field.
- Select the Attachments category on the left hand side. A Choose a Folder dialog will open and prompt you to choose a location for your attachments. We recommend selecting the Documents/Eudora Folder/Attachments Folder.
- Click OK when finished.
The remaining categories need not be changed. Click on the OK button to save your configuration.
- If you have problems, you can visit Eudora's online technical support site at http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/
If this is a new install a Eudora Folder should have been created in your Documents folder
. This folder holds your e-mail mailboxes, attachments and configuration settings.)
If using a standard modem, remember to dial in using Internet Connect before checking your E-mail with Eudora.

Understanding Eudora's three modes - Sponsored Mode, Light Mode, and Paid Mode
Sponsored Mode
Eudora can be configured to work in three different modes of operation. The default mode of operation is sponsored mode. Eudora's sponsored mode displays a rotating small advertisement in the bottom left corner of the screen that can not be hidden. In sponsored mode Eudora has all the features of Eudora Paid mode (spell checking, multiple personalites, etc).Light Mode
Light Mode does not have any rotating advertisement. However, it lacks the full features of sponsored and paid mode (no spell checker and can only configure for one e-mail account, etc). Eudora must be manually configured to run in Eudora Light mode. To do follow the immediate steps below:
- Open Eudora.
- From the menu bar click on 'Help,' select 'Payment and Registration.'
- Click on the 'Light Mode' button.
Paid Mode
In Paid Mode Eudora runs with all features (includes spell checking, muliple personalities, etc). and with no advertisements. If you select this mode, you will need to be connected to the Internet and have your credit card ready to pay for this service. To do follow the immediate steps below:
- Make sure you are connected to the Internet via a direct network connection (on campus) or via a modem (from home).
- Open Eudora.
- From the menu bar click on 'Help,' select 'Payment and Registration.'
- Click on the 'Paid Mode' button. (If you have upgraded from Eudora Pro 4.x you will be asked to type in the registration code. If this occurs, type in the code that was provided during the installation and follow the instructions when prompted).
- Click on the 'Continue' button. Your default web browser will open and you will be prompted for registration information and your credit card information. Fill out the information and when finished click on the 'Purchase and Register' button.
Other Considerations
If you receive a high quantity of e-mail daily and are checking your mail from both work and home using Eudora make sure to empty your Eudora trash frequently. If you throw something in the trash and empty the trash the e-mail message will be removed off of the SFSU server (this is assuming you followed our configuration recommendations for setup above). This can be very critical in preventing the SFSU e-mail server from being overloaded and should improve the performance of Eudora by keeping your inbox file on the server small. To empty the trash click on 'Special' from the Eudora menu bar and select 'Empty Trash.' The next time you check your mail with Eudora these messages will be removed from the SFSU server.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some frequently asked questions. More information can be found at http://www.sfsu.edu/~doit/hd.htm
- Q. Can I still use the Unix mail program Pine?
A. While this is possible it is recommended that you not use Pine to read your mail if your are using Eudora. Several problems may occur when going back and forth between the two different mail programs. Make sure not to run both E-mail programs simultaneously.- Q. How can I learn more about using Eudora?
A. You can use the built in 'Help' in Eudora to search for a topic you are interested in. To do so, select 'Help' -> 'Topics' from the Eudora menu bar. Click on the 'Index' tab and type in the topic you need help on, then click on the 'Display' button.
You can also run the various online tutorials using your web browser at http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/tutorials/
Check out Qualcomm Eudora's web site at http://www.eudora.com/
It is also recommended that you attend one of the free Division of Information Technology training classes. You can use a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer to view the Division of Information Technology Training calendar at http://www.sfsu.edu/~doit/train.htm/.- Q. I am using an outside Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as Earthlink or DSL (a digital subscriber line). Can I still check and send messages using my SFSU e-mail account?
A. Yes, however, you will need to change the SMTP server setting within Eudora to match the SMTP server of the ISP or DSL provider. For instance, if you dial into Earthlink for Internet Access you will need to change the SMTP server to mail.earthlink.net
If you used PacBell as your DSL provider the SMTP server setting would need to be mail.pacbell.net
If you are unsure of the SMTP server setting, you should contact the ISP's technical support or check the ISP's web site for this information. Please note that the SMTP setting will only affect mail being sent, not mail being received. If you are having problems sending mail, check your SMTP server settings and verify that they match your ISP's SMTP server settings.- Q. Messages in my Eudora inbox appear to be missing?
A. Many times the inbox in Eudora gets corrupted when the file size of the inbox gets too large. We recommend creating folders (other mailboxes) to sort your mail. Try not to keep your inbox too large. Qualcomm recommends to keep your mailboxes under 1 Megabyte to prevent corruptions. Trash unnecessary attachments and junk e-mail and use the 'empty trash' feature of Eudora. Keep the mail that is stored on the SFSU server to a minimum to prevent problems.- Q. Can I get a computer virus by opening up an e-mail message?
A. Generally your computer can not get a virus by simply reading the text of an e-mail message. However, most viruses are sent as attachments to an e-mail message. We recommend using caution when opening up any type of attachment file. If in doubt we recommend that you do not open the attachment. You should have the most recent Antivirus software and the most recent updates to the antivirus software before opening any type of attachment. (You must update your virus software frequently to protect against new viruses). If you are in doubt, we recommend contacting the Division of Information Technology Helpdesk for assistance. The Division of Information Technology has a site license for Virex for the SFSU campus. We strongly recommend using this software to safeguard your computer against viruses.- Q. I have a problem that is not listed here?
A. Check Eudora Technical Support and KnowledgeBase on the web at http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/
