SFSU Macintosh OS 9.x Dial-up Internet Access
Before you begin, obtain the following:
- An SFSU Internet Account.
- A Modem with a baud rate of 9,600 baud or higher.
- An Apple Macintosh computer running Mac operating System 9.0 - 9.2.2
Mac OS 9 includes Internet Software and provides a simple method of configuring your computer to connect to the Internet using the Internet Setup Assistant. If you want to skip the Internet Setup Assistant and manually configure the settings skip ahead to the section Configuring TCP/IP.
Using the Internet Assistant with Mac OS 9.0 - 9.2.2
First review the entire configuration procedure. As you complete each step, check the box to the left of the instructions. If you see error messages during the installation, write them down and note which step you were on when they appeared.
One of the first things you will see after installing Mac OS 9 is the Internet Setup assistant. You can also access this by double clicking on the Internet Setup Assistant found in the Internet folder which is located in the located in Applications (OS 9) folder of your hard drive.
Introduction
Click the Yes button.

Internet Access
Select the Yes button.
Introduction
Read the information and click on the right arrow.
Configuration name and connection type
Type in a name for the configuration. 'SFSU 239-0176' is recommended for the 239-0176 number; 'SFSU 405-4000' for the faculty number, 'SFSU 15 Minute' for the 15 minute number - 338-3263. Click the right arrow button to continue.
Modem Settings
Select your modem type from the list of modems. If an option for your modem is not here, try using Hayes 'Accura 288' or 'Supra 288.' If this does not work, contact the Modem manufacturer. If your Macintosh has a built-in internal modem you will want to make sure to select 'Apple Internal 56K Modem.'
Select the port you are using from the 'Port:' menu. This will probably be the Internal Modem Port unless you are using a PowerBook then it may be the Modem/Printer Port or PC Card slot.
Select Tone or Pulse. Click the right arrow button to continue.

Configuration Information
Enter the phone number, 239-0176. For regular SFSU Faculty members: the number, 405-4000. For the 15 minute number use 338-3263 (this number disconnects from the modem pool automatically after 15 minutes and is useful for quickly checking or sending e-mail).
If you are outside the 415 area code, add 1415 before the phone number. If you have call waiting, it should be disabled. Usually this is done by adding *70, before the phone number.
Enter your SFSU login and password. Click the right arrow button to continue.
IP Address
Select No for 'Is there an IP address for this configuration.' Click the right arrow button to continue.
Domain Name Servers
Enter 130.212.10.163 and 130.212.10.162 for the DNS address.
Enter sfsu.edu for the Domain Name. Click the right arrow button to continue.
E-mail address and password
Enter your SFSU E-mail address and password. Click the right arrow button to continue.
E-mail Account and host computer
Enter you SFSU E-mail address for the POP account and sfsu.edu for the SMTP host. Click the right arrow button to continue.
Newsgroup Host Computer
Enter news.csus.edu for the Newsgroup Host computer. Click the right arrow button to continue.
Conclusion
Click 'Go Ahead' to complete the setup and exit. Your modem should then try to dial out and make a connection.

Manual Configuration of TCP/IP
If you wish to configure TCP/IP manually, use the following directions.
Configuring TCP/IP
Click on the Apple Menu icon
, select Control Panels then select TCP/IP.
Select PPP from the 'Connect Via:' pop up menu.
Select Using PPP Server from the 'Configure' menu
Enter 130.212.10.163 and 130.212.10.162 into the 'Name Server addr:' boxEnter sfsu.edu in the 'Search domains:' box
Close the TCP/IP window, click 'Save' in the 'Save Changes' dialog box

Configuring the Modem
Click on the Apple Menu icon
, select Control Panels then select Modem.
Select the port you are using from the connect via menu. This will probably be the Modem Port unless you are using a PowerBook then it may be the Modem/Printer Port or PC Card slot.
Select your modem type from the 'Modem' menu. If an option for your modem is not here, you will need to contact the Modem manufacturer.
Manually Configuring Remote Access
Click on the Apple Menu icon
, select Control Panels then select Remote Access.
Enter your SFSU login name and password (if you have not already done so).
Enter the phone number, 239-0176. For regular SFSU Faculty: the number, 405-4000. For the 15 minute number use 338-3263. If you are outside the 415 area code, add 1415 before the phone number.
If you have call waiting, it should be disabled. Usually this is done by adding *70, before the phone number.
Using Internet Software
Once you have made a connection using Remote Access, you can use Internet applications such as Internet Explorer, Netscape and Eudora. You should always connect to the Internet using the Remote Access control panel when you wish to run Internet applications.
Opening an Internet Connection
You should always manually connect to the Internet before attempting to use Internet applications.
- Click on the Apple Menu icon
, select Control Panels then select Remote Access.
- Click the Connect button. The Connect button becomes a Cancel button while the modem is connecting.
- Once the modem connects, the Connect button becomes a Disconnect button.
- Launch the Internet applications you want to use (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Eudora, etc).
Closing an Internet Connection
You should always disconnect from the Internet using the Remote Access control panel when you are finished.
- Click on the Apple Menu icon
, select Control Panels then select Remote Access.
- Click the Disconnect button.
Problems:
- Make sure Appletalk is configured to Remote Only.
- Click on the Apple Menu icon
, select Control Panels then select Appletalk.
- In the connection method field select Remote Only.
- Close the Appletalk window and save if prompted.
- Set up a Manual Connection: In some situations it may be necessary to connect manually using Remote Access. A manual connection will give you access to a command prompt window which is useful for trouble shooting. If you are having problems connecting follow the steps below to manually connect to the modem pool:
- Click on the Apple Menu icon
, select Control Panels then select Remote Access.
- Click the Options button
- Click the Protocol tab
- Select Connect to a command line host
- Select Use terminal window.
- Click OK
- Click the Connect button. A connecting Terminal window will appear
- At the Login prompt, type your SFSU login (without the @sfsu.edu)
- At the password prompt, type your SFSU password
- At the sfsu-annex prompt, type: ppp
- Modem Configuration:
Not all modems will show up in the 'Modem' control panel. If your modem is not listed there, then look on the disk that came with your modem for OT modem scripts. If the scripts are available, copy them to your hard drive and place them in the 'Modem Scripts' folder located in the 'Extensions Folder' in the 'System Folder.'If the scripts are not available, try selecting different modems in the 'Modems' control panel. Once you've found one that works, visit the web site of the modem manufacturer to see if they provide scripts for downloading.
