Remote Access With Windows Kermit (Win100)

Windows Kermit is a communication program for Windows that allows you to dial in and log in to your Internet account to do your work.

Read "Accessing Internet Tools on the AFS Login Servers" for information on using your Internet account. The AFS Login Servers includes the following host computer names: apollo and libra.

To download a copy of WinKermit:

Installing and Starting Windows Kermit

  1. Make a directory on your hard drive (i.e., MKDIR C:\WINKERM). Copy the wnkerm23.exe file from the diskette to winkerm directory on the hard drive by typing at the prompt: COPY WNKER23.EXE C:\WINKERM

  2. Change directory to WINKERM by typing at the prompt: C: and press the enter key. Next, type: CD WINKERM Finally, type: wnkerm23 to execute the file.

  3. To create a program group for Windows Kermit, open Windows, go to File menu in Program Manager, choose New, Program Group and click OK. In the Description box type: Winkerm and press the enter key. Next, click on the File menu and choose New. Then click on Program Item and press enter. For the Description box, type: WINKERMIT On the Command Line, type: win100.exe For working directory, type: C:\WINKERM Then click OK.

  4. Start Windows Kermit by double clicking on the WINKERMIT icon in the WINKERM Program Group. If you have an external modem, you should turn it on now. Internal modems are powered on when the computer is turned on.

Setting Windows Kermit Parameters

  1. From the Win100 Terminal Emulator program, select Setup and click on Modem... and set the following parameters:

    Baud: set it to the baud rate of your modem (i.e., 2400, 9600, 19200)
    Parity: 8 Bit None
    Stop bits: 1
    Port: Select appropriate COM ports (1, 2, 3, or 4)
    Click on the box next to "Xon/Xoff" and set Xoff Point to 64 and click OK
    Click on the box next to "Save Settings" to save the changes you made.

  2. Click on Setup then General... and select VT100 emulation and 7 bits. Check the box for Save Settings and click OK.

Connecting to an AFS Login Server

  1. Type AT. You will see OK on the screen. If OK does not appear on your screen, go back to the Setup menu and Modem... option, and check if the configurations are correct. Reboot your PC. If you have an external modem turn it off and on.

  2. Type ATDT2390176 (2 hour limit) for 9600 to 56K baud modems. Faculty can type ATDT4054000 (2 hour limit) for 9600 to 56 K baud modems.

  3. If the line you dial is busy, there will be a message "No Carrier" or "Busy" displayed on the screen. Repeat Step 2 until you get connected.

  4. If a proper connection is made, you will see a "login:" prompt. Type your login or account name and press enter. When the "password:" prompt appears, enter your password and press enter. Your password will not be echoed on the screen. If the correct login and password are entered, a brief message and a "sfsu-annex:" prompt will be displayed. At that prompt, type: host; where host is either libra, or apollo (i.e., sfsu-annex: apollo) and press the enter key.

  5. Once connected to the proper host, enter your login/account name and password at the appropriate prompt. If you get a "login incorrect" or "incorrect password" response, you are not typing the correct information for your account. If the error message continues, you will need to obtain a new password. You can change your password by launching your favorite browser on any campus computer and typing in the following address in the Location/Address box:

Transferring Files

Once you are logged in to an AFS Login Server, you invoke Kermit by typing "kermit" at the system prompt (i.e., apollo% kermit). You will see the Kermit command prompt (C-Kermit>). If you are transferring a binary file (an executable program, graphic image, wordprocessing document, etc), type set file type binary at the C-Kermit> prompt before you begin transferring files. Otherwise, type set file type text when transferring text files.

  1. Transferring Files From Your PC to an AFS Login Server

    a. At the C-Kermit> prompt, type: receive.
    b. From the menu bar, select Kermit, choose Files, and click on Send... Select the file and confirm your choice.

  2. Transferring Files From an AFS Login Server to Your PC

    a. At the C-Kermit> prompt, type: send filename (filename is the name of the file you want to transfer).
    b. From the menu bar, select Kermit, choose Files and click on Receive.

Changing the directory on the PC and the AFS Login Server:

  1. Changing directories on the PC:

    From the menu bar, select Kermit, choose Local, click on Directory/Chdir and specify your directory.

  2. Changing directories on the AFS Login Server:

    From the menu bar, select Kermit, choose Remote, click on Change directory... and specify your directory.

When the file transfer is completed, type: quit at the C-Kermit> prompt; this will get you back to the Login Server system prompt (i.e., libra% or apollo%).

Logging Off from the AFS Login Server and Returning to Windows

  1. Type "logout" at the system prompt (i.e., apollo% logout).
  2. At the "sfsu-annex:" prompt, type "quit", to disconnect.
  3. To quit from Windows Kermit, click on the little kermit icon in the upper left corner of menu bar and click on Close.
