Remote Access With Mackermit (Kermit 0.99(188))

MacKermit is a communications software that allows you to dial in and log in to your Internet account to do your work.

Read Accessing Internet Tools on the AFS Login Servers" for information on using your Internet account. The AFS Login Servers include the following host computer names: apollo and libra.

Installing and Starting MacKermit

  1. Drag the MacKermit Folder from the MacKermit software disk to your Macintosh hard disk. You should read the informational documents that accompany the MacKermit program for additional information.

  2. Start the MacKermit program by double-clicking on the Kermit 0.99(188) icon in the Mac Kermit folder. If you have an external modem, you should turn it on now. Internal modems are powered on when the computer is turned on.

Setting MacKermit Parameters

  1. Select Settings and Communications... from the MacKermit menu item to set the following communications parameters:

    Baud: set it to the baud rate of your modem (i.e., 9600, 14400, 28800)
    Parity/Bits: None/8
    Serial Port: Modem or Printer

  2. Click OK to save the changes you made.
    Leave the four boxes at the bottom unmarked.

Connecting to an AFS Login Server

  1. Type AT and press the return key. You will see OK on the screen.

  2. If OK does not appear on your screen, go back to the Settings and Communications... menu in the MacKermit menu item and check if the values are correct. Reboot your MAC system. If you have an external modem turn it off and on.

  3. Type ATDT2390176 (2 hour limit) for 9600 to 56K baud modems. Faculty can type ATDT4054000 (2 hour limit) for 9600 to 56K baud modems.

  4. If the line you dial is busy, there will be a message such as "No Carrier" or "Busy" displayed on the screen. Repeat Step 2 until you get connected.

  5. If a proper connection is made, you will see a "login:" prompt. Type your login or account name and press return. When the "password:" prompt appears, enter your password and press return. Your password will not be echoed on the screen. If the correct login and password are entered, a brief message and a "sfsu-annex:" prompt will be displayed. At that prompt, type: host; where host is either orion or apollo (i.e., sfsu-annex: apollo) and press the return key.

  6. Once connected to the proper host, enter your login/account name and password at the appropriate prompt. If you get a "login incorrect" or "incorrect password" response, you are not typing the correct information for your account. If the error message continues, you will need to obtain a new password. You can change your password by launching your favorite browser on any campus computer and typing in the following address in the Location/Address box:

Transferring Files

Once you are logged on to an AFS Login Server, you invoke Kermit by typing "kermit" at the system prompt (i.e., apollo% kermit). You will see the Kermit command prompt (C-Kermit>). If you are transferring a binary file (an executable program, graphic image, wordprocessing document, etc), type set file type binary at the C-Kermit> prompt before you begin transferring files. Otherwise, type set file type text when transferring text files.

  1. Transferring Files From an AFS Login Server To Your Macintosh

    a. At the C-Kermit> prompt, type: send filename (filename is the name of the file you want to transfer).
    b. From the MacKermit menu, select Receive file... from the File-Transfer menu.

  2. Transferring Files From Your Macintosh to an AFS Login Server

    a. At the C-Kermit> prompt, type: receive
    b. From the MacKermit menu, select Send file... from the File-Transfer menu.

Changing the directory on the Mac and the AFS Login Server:

  1. Changing directories on the Mac:

    From the MacKermit menu, select Set Directory from the File-Transfer menu and specify the folder.

  2. Changing directories on the AFS Login Server:

    From the MacKermit menu, select Cwd from the File-Transfer menu and specify the directory.

When the file transfer is completed, type: quit at the C-Kermit> prompt; this will get you back to the Login Server system prompt (i.e., orion%, apollo%).

Logging Off from the AFS Login Server and Returning to the MAC OS

  1. Type "logout" at the system prompt (i.e., apollo% logout).
  2. At the "sfsu-annex:" prompt, type "quit" to disconnect.
  3. To quit from MacKermit, select Quit from the File menu.
