Off Campus - Internet Starter Kit for Windows 3.x

Before you begin, obtain the following:

  1. A SFSU Internet Account.
  2. A 9,600 baud or higher speed modem.
  3. Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
  4. The SFSU Windows 3.x Internet Kit that includes Netscape, Trumpet Winsock, and the SFSU PPP Script. The two disk (blank, formatted, 3-1/2" high density) set can be created using a World Wide Web browser by following the instructions below: (A 3 disk set is also available for those who need 5-1/4" diskettes).
    • Locate any PC on the SFSU campus running Windows and Netscape or Mosaic. (Note: If you are dialing in remotely from a commercial Internet Service Provider, you will be denied access when attempting to copy the kit.)
    • Connect to ftp://ftp2.sfsu.edu/pub/win3x/internet_kit/ and copy the files for disk1 and disk 2 your diskettes.

Installation

Review the entire installation process first. As you complete each step, check the box to the left of the instructions. If you see error messages during the installation, write them down and note which step you were on when they appeared.

Checkbox imageStart Windows. If you are running Microsoft Office, you must Close/Exit it now or installation will fail. (For details see Problems?).
Checkbox imageIf you are using 3-1/2 " HD disks, place disk #2 in a HD Floppy Drive. Do NOT begin with disk #1. (If you are using 5-1/4" HD disks, place disk #1 in a HD Floppy drive.)
Checkbox imageThe next step copies and decompresses the Netscape, Trumpet Winsock, and SFSU customization files to two directories on your C drive. You must have at least 5MB free space on your C drive before you begin this process. The install process creates directories called SFSUTEMP and TRUMPET, and will overwrite any previous installations of these programs. If you wish to install on a different drive you must edit the INSTALL.BAT file on disk #2 (edit disk #1 if using 5-1/4" disks), using Windows Notepad. Do not be concerned if you see an error message that states 'directory already exists'.
Checkbox imageFrom the Program Manager menu bar click on File, then select Run from the drop down menu. Fill in type: a:\install, click the OK button. If installing from the b drive rather than the a drive, replace a with b in the command above.
Checkbox imageYou should see files being copied. Pay close attention to the messages on your computer's screen and note any errors. If you are using 3-1/2" diskettes, you should be prompted to insert disk #1 and then to reinsert disk #2. If you are using 5-1/4" diskettes, insert the correct disk when prompted.
Checkbox imageFrom the Program Manager menu bar click on File then select Run. Fill in type: c:\sfsutemp\n16e202.exe, then click the OK button.
Checkbox imageFrom the Program Manager menu bar click on File then select Run. Fill in type: c:\sfsutemp\setup, then click the OK button. This will start the Netscape setup.
Checkbox imageDuring the Netscape installation, follow the instructions on the screen. When prompted for "Netscape Navigator Destination Path," accept the default C:\Netscape\. When prompted to "Select Folder," replace Netscape 2.0 by typing in Internet Access. Click on the Next button. See the Problems? section below if you receive an error message about an incorrect version of Win32. If prompted to view the README file, uncheck the option box in the Read me window. Click on Finish. When asked if you would like to connect to Netscape's setup site to continue installation, click on the No button.
Checkbox imageFrom the File menu select Run, enter type: sysedit, then click the OK button.
Checkbox imageEdit the PATH line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to include "C:\TRUMPET;" right after the PATH statement e.g., PATH C:\TRUMPET;C:\WIN
From the System Config Editor menu bar click on File then select Exit and save the file by clicking the Yes button when prompted.
Checkbox imageTo create a TCPMan icon, double click the Internet Access group icon. From the Program Manager menu bar click on File then select New, choose Select Program Item, then click the OK button.
Checkbox imageYou should then enter Enter c:\trumpet\tcpman.exe as the Command Linethen click the OK button.
Checkbox imageTake out the diskette from the drive, exit Windows, and reboot (hold down the Control key, and press the Alt and Delete keys simultaneously).
Checkbox imageStart Windows. In the Internet Access Folder, double click the TCPMan icon. Read the license agreement and click on the Accept button. In the Trumpet Winsock Setup window, make sure your settings match those shown here. Do not worry if TCPMan shows an error the first time you open it.

Settings for TCPMAN are shown

Checkbox imageChange the SLIP port to match the COM port (1, 2, 3, or 4) your modem is using. Internal modems typically use COM port 2; external modems typically use COM port 1.
Checkbox imageChange the Baud rate to match your modem's speed. Use 19200 for a 9600 modem; use 19200 or 38400 for a 14,400 modem; or use 38400 for a 28800 modem. Then click the OK button. A dialogue box stating "You will need to restart Trumpet Winsock..." Click the OK button.
Checkbox imageClose Trumpet Winsock, then restart it.
Checkbox imageClick on the Dialler menu option and select setup.cmd. When prompted to 'Enter your phone number', type in one of the following number: 2390176. SFSU regular faculty can use the dedicated faculty number: 405-4000. If you are calling from outside the 415 area code, place a 1415 before the number, e.g., 14152390176. Click the OK button.
Checkbox imageWhen prompted to 'Enter your login username', type in your SFSU Internet login name. Click the OK button.
Checkbox imageWhen prompted to 'Enter your login password', type in your SFSU password. Click the OK button.
Checkbox imageExit and then restart TCPMan by double clicking on the TCPMan icon. TURN ON MODEM (if external).
Checkbox imageTo connect to SFSU, select login from the Dialler menu option. If all works well, you should see the messages: "Script completed", "PPP ENABLED", and "My IP Address is = ###.###.###.###" (a number should appear). If you see Script Aborted followed by PPP Enabled, something went wrong - select Bye from the Dialler menu option, check your settings and try again.
Checkbox imageMinimize the Trumpet Winsock (TCPMan) window (do not close it). Now start Netscape by double clicking on the Netscape Navigator icon. To connect to the SFSU homepage, enter http://www.sfsu.edu in the location box. This can be set as the default homepage by clicking on Options, selecting General Preferences, selecting the Appearance tab and entering http://www.sfsu.edu in the Home Page Location box.
Checkbox imageTo quit TCPMan select Bye from the Dialler menu option.
The Trumpet Winsock (TCPMan) program has a 30 day free trial period. SFSU faculty, staff, and students can E-mail helpdesk@sfsu.edu to request the SFSU site license registration name and password. All requests must be sent from an SFSU account name (E-mail address).

Problems?

Microsoft Office is installed and you don't know how to close it...
While in Windows, press and hold down the Alt key then press the tab key a few times to see if MS Office appears in a small box in the center of the screen. If MS Office appears, then it is currently running. Let go of both keys (the alt and tab keys). You should see the MS Office menu bar. Click once on the Office icon, and select Exit.
Error message: "Could not write to file named c:\windows\system/compobj.dll"...
You tried to install the SFSU Internet kit without closing Microsoft Office first (see solution above).
Netscape returns a No DNS entry error message upon start up...
Usually you get this error message because Trumpet Winsock did not make a successful PPP connection. First verify that all your settings in Trumpet Winsock are correct. The login script may have aborted before completing, the phone line might have dropped or the password for the account may have been entered incorrectly. Many modems require an initialization string for ppp access (see below). Scroll to the bottom of the Trumpet Winsock window and check for a 'script aborted' message . If the script aborted, you will need to choose bye from the Dialler menu to hang up the modem, then select login to dial in again. If the script continually aborts, E-mail helpdesk@sfsu.edu for the manual login procedure.
If you need to add a modem initialization string to the dialing script...
Try to find a modem initialization string in your modem manual or use &F; if you cannot find a string. Select Edit Scripts from the Dialler menu. Then click on the login.cmd script. Insert the initialization string between the quotations of the $modemsetup enviroment variable. Pac Bell message center users will need to enter an X0 to the $modemsetup variable in the login.cmd script. Make the changes, Save and then Exit the editor.
You have the wrong version of Win32...
Read the C:\NETSCAPE\README.TXT file to learn how to remove Win32; you do not need it for Netscape. Or pick up a copy of Win32 v1.3 ( OLE32S13.EXE) at http://www.sfsu.edu/ftp/win/www/
The characters 'atdt' are shown in the window, but the phone number is not dialed ...
You have not run setup.cmd. Click on the Dialler menu option, and choose setup.cmd. Make sure to enter a valid SFSU modem number. Exit and restart TCPMan.
The modem does not dial (Script aborted)...
The computer is not communicating with the modem. Make sure the slip port setting in TCPMan matches the COM port your modem is using. Also check the cable, phone line, and power to ensure they are all connected/set correctly. You can also try turning 'Online Status Detection' to None. If it still won't dial, try lowering the baud rate setting.
A No carrier message is returned when running the login script ...
Press the Escape key a few times to abort the login script. If the modem has not hung up correctly, choose bye from the Dialler menu and wait for the script to complete. Then choose login from the Dialler menu. If you consistently receive a no carrier message, check the phone cable to make sure it is connected to your modem correctly.
TCPMan won't load...
Check the SLIP Port setting in the Trumpet Winsock setup window and make sure this number matches the COM port of your modem.
The login script seems to dial in, but fails...
Log into your Internet account using a terminal program, such as Kermit or Windows Terminal. Check to make sure that your SFSU account still exists and that your password has not expired. An exclamation point, a period, or a space in your password may cause the script to fail. If you are currently using one of these characters, you may need to modify your password.
To change or modify the phone number in Trumpet Winsock...
Choose Dialler from the menu bar and select setup.cmd. If you need to disable call-waiting, place a *70 before the phone number, e.g., *7014152390176
If you have recently changed the password to your SFSU Internet account...
Whenever you renew your SFSU password, remember to rerun setup.cmd from the Dialler and enter your new password. Do NOT use TCPMan to change your SFSU password; this must be done from a telnet session.
If you need other Internet clients such as Eudora or Netscape helper programs...
In the location box in Netscape, type in http://www.sfsu.edu/~doit/helpdesk/wdevapp.htm, then click on the appropriate program link to download the application to your home computer.
