Using Terminal for Windows 3.x

Terminal is a modem communications program that comes with Windows 3.x. It is used as a mechanism to dial into your UNIX account to use text-based Internet programs such as PINE, TIN and FTP.


To set up Terminal to dial into SFSU's dial-in-modems, follow the instructions below:

  • In Program Manager, double-click on Accessories and double-click on Terminal icon Terminal Icon.

    Normally, you will see the Communications window on your screen automatically. If this screen does not appear, from the Terminal window menu item, select Settings => Communications...

  • Select the Baud Rate that specifies your modem, i.e., select 19200 for the 14.4 KBPS modem.

  • Select 8 Data Bits, 1 Stop Bits, None for Parity.

  • Under Connector field, specify the COM port that your modem uses.

  • Click the OK button.

  • From the terminal menu item, select Settings => Phone Number.... At the Dial: field, type the phone number to access the SFSU modem pool 405-4200.

  • Check the Redial After Timing Out box and click the OK button.

  • If you would like to save these settings for future use, go to the menu item, select File => Save
    . Under the File Name: field, type in the name that you wish to save this setting under, i.e., sfsu405.

  • Click the Ok Button button.

  • From the Terminal window, select Phone and Dial to start the modem dialing into SFSU.

  • If you've made a connection, you should get a Login: prompt. Type in your SFSU account name / login at this prompt and press the return / enter key.

  • At the Password: prompt that appears next, type in your password. If the login and password are both correct, you should see a sfsu-annex: prompt.

  • If you are dialing into SFSU with the 405-4200 or 405-4000 (for faculty only) number, at this annex prompt, type one of the AFS login servers, apollo or libra

  • You will then see a login: prompt again. Type in your account name / login at this prompt and press enter / return key. At the Password: prompt, type in your password.

  • The system will ask you to press the key you use to backspace and press the enter / return key. Follow the instructions on your screen.

  • If this is the first time you've logged in, you will need to answer a few questions to customize the environment. These questions are asked once and only once.

    After answering the questions, you will be at the system prompt. If you are logged into apollo, your system prompt will be apollo%. If you logged into libra, your system prompt will be libra%.

  • Now you can issue Unix commands or type: pine to start checking mail. Be sure to press the enter/return key after issuing a command. Click here for more information on pine.

  • To quit from pine, press q. At the system prompt, type: bye and press the enter / return key. Type: quit at the sfsu-annex: prompt. You should get a NO CARRIER message on your screen.

  • From the Terminal window, select Phone => Hang-up.

  • To exit from Terminal, select File => Exit.

  • To make a connection again with the same settings, double click on the Terminal icon. Select File => Open...

  • Select the file that you saved previously, i.e., sfsu405.trm
    and click the OK button.

  • From the Terminal Window, select Phone => Dial.
