Manual Login Procedure for the SFSU Windows 95 Internet Kit

You may want to debug dial-up problems to the SFSU modem pool by performing a manual login that bypasses the SFSU dial-up script and uses information entered by manually by hand. To do so on a Microsoft Windows 95 system, you need to follow these procedures.

  1. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  2. Double-click on the Dial-up Networking folder icon.
  3. Double click the Make a New Connection icon.
  4. Enter SFSU-MAN-PPP in the "name of the computer you are dialing" field.

  5. Click on the Configure button.

  6. Select the Options tab.

  7. Put a check next to Bring up terminal window after dialing button.

  8. Click on the OK button.

  9. Click on the Next button.

  10. Enter 239-0176 (if you are out of the area code, you may need to enter 415 in the area code blank) in the telephone number space provided. (See Modem Resources for more telephone numbers).

  11. Click on the Next button.

  12. Click the Finish button.

  13. Double-click on the SFSU-MAN-PPP icon.

  14. After you have established a connection by clicking on the Connect button, wait until you hear static sounds from your modem. You will then see a Post Dial Terminal Screen appear.

  15. Enter your login and password at the appropriate prompts. At the sfsu-annex#: prompt, type: ppp (in lowercase) and press the [enter/return] key. A series of junk characters should appear.

  16. Click on the Continue button at the bottom of the window.

  17. You will then see a dialog box showing "Verifying user name and password." and "Logging on to network." Shortly after, you should then see "Connected at XXXXXX bps." where XXXXXX is the modem speed that is being connected.

  18. To launch Netscape, double-click on your Netscape Navigator icon.
