Laptop Link Dial-up Access in Library 219

The telephone ports in the J. Paul Leonard Library room 219 are provided to the SFSU community for your convenience in connecting to the campus network using a laptop computer and modem.

  1. Connect a standard phone cable from your laptop's modem port and connect it the the telephone port located on the left side of one of the jacks on the wall. (The ethernet ports on the right hand side of the jacks are not functional).
  2. Identify your computer's specific operating system then follow the instructions below to configure your laptop for dial-up access.

Connecting a Microsoft Windows XP System

  1. Log on to the Windows XP operating system as Administrator
  2. Click on the Startbutton and select All Programs > Accessories > Communications.
  3. Click on the New Connection Wizard icon. Make New Connection ico
  4. A Network Connection Wizard window should appear. Click the Next button.
  5. Select the radio button next to Connect to the Internet then click the Next button.
  6. Select Set up my connection manually then click on the Next button.
  7. Select Connect using a dial-up modem then click on the Next button.
  8. In the Connection Name field enter Library 219 then click on the Next button.
  9. Enter 92390176 in the Phone Number to Dial field (for the 2 hour limit line) or
    Enter 83263 in the Phone Number to Dial field (for the 15 minute limit line) then click on the Next button.
  10. At the Create this connection for field check check the radio button for 'Anyone's use.' Click on the Next button.
  11. Enter your SFSU account name in User name field. Enter your SFSU account password in Password and Confirm Password fields.
  12. Deselect the 3 check boxes directly below the Confirm Password field. Click on the Next button.
  13. Select Add a shortcut to this connection on my desktop. Click the Finish button.
  14. Double-click the Library 219 icon on your desktop. Verify the information and click on the Dial button.

Connecting a Microsoft Windows 2000 System

  1. If your computer is running the Windows 2000 operating system log onto workstation as Administrator.
  2. Click on the Start button, select Settings > Control Panel. Control Panel Icon image. Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections icon. Network and Dial Up Connections icon
  3. Double-click the Make New Connection icon. Make New Connection icon
  4. A Network Connection Wizard window should appear. Click the Next button.
  5. Select the radio button next to Dial-up to the Internet then click the Next button.
  6. Select I want to set up my Internet connection manually then click on the Next button.
  7. Select I connect through a phone line and a modem then click on the Next button.
  8. In the Internet Connection Wizard window enter 415 in the Area code field.
  9. In the Telephone number field enter 9239-0176 (for the 2 hour line) or 83263 (for the 15 minute line). Click on the Next button.
  10. Make sure the Use area codes and dialing rules box NOT is checked. Click on the Next button.
  11. Enter your SFSU account name in User name field and the SFSU password in the Password field. Click on the Next button.
  12. In the Connection name field enter Library 219. Click on the Next button.
  13. When asked to Set Up Your Internet Mail Account select No and click on the Next button.
  14. Make sure the box next to To connect to the Internet immediately... is checked then click on the Finish button.
  15. A Dial-up Connection window should appear. Verify the User name and password are correct. Click on the Connect button.

Connecting a Microsoft Windows 98/Millennium System

  1. If you are using a Windows 98 system:
    Double click the My Computer iconMy Computer iconthen double click the Dial-Up Networking folder. Dial Up Networking icon
    If you are using a Windows Millennium system:
    Click on the the Start button, select Programs, select Accessories, select Communications then select Dial-Up Networking.Dial Up Networking folder
  2. Double click the Make New Connection icon. Make New Connection icon
  3. For the name, enter: Library 219. Then click Next.
  4. Enter 92390176 in the Phone Number field (for the 2 hour limit line) or
    Enter 83263 in the Phone Number field (for the 15 minute limit line) then click on the Next button.
  5. Click the Finish button. An Icon for the connection will be created in the Dial-up Networking window.
  6. To connect, double click the Library 219 icon.
  7. Enter your SFSU account name in User name field. Enter your SFSU account password in Password field.
  8. Click the Connect button to dial in.

Connecting an Apple Macintosh Running OS X

  1. Click on the Apple menu icon Apple Menu icon select Location and then select Network Preferences.
  2. Next to the Show field select Internal modem from the drop down menu.
    If Internal modem is not viewable in the Show field drop down menu select Active Ports and check the box next to Internal Modem.
    Click the Apply Now button if you make changes.
  3. Open the Macintosh Hard Drive Macintosh Hard drive iconthen select the Applications folder Applications folder.
  4. Double-click Internet Connect Internet Connect icon
  5. In the Internal Modem window verify that the correct modem is selected in the Configuration field.
  6. Click on the Edit button.
  7. In the Network window verify that the Show field is set to Internal Modem.
  8. Next to the Location field, select New Location....
  9. Change the Location name to Library 219
  10. Select the TCP/IP Tab..... Next to the Configure field select Using PPP
  11. Click on the PPP tab. In the Service Provider field type: SFSU
  12. In the Telephone Number field enter 92390176 for the 2 hour limit line) or 83263 (for the 15-minute line).
  13. In the Account Name field enter your SFSU LOGIN. In the Password field enter your SFSU password.
  14. Click the Apply Now button and close the Network window.
  15. When you close the Network window,  the Internal Modem Window appears. Verify all the information is correct then click the Connect button.

Connecting an Apple Macintosh Running OS 8.x - 9.x

  1. Click on the Apple menu Apple Menu iconselect Control Panels then select TCP/IP.
  2. Set the Connect Via field to PPP. Set the Configure field to Using PPP Server.
  3. In the Name server addr: field enter 130.212.10.163. In the Search domains field enter sfsu.edu
  4. Click on the Apple menu Apple Menu iconselect Control Panels then select Appletalk.
  5. Set the Connect via field to Remote Only.
  6. Click on the Apple menu Apple Menu iconselect Control Panels then select Remote Access. (If using OS 8.x select PPP).
  7. Enter your SFSU LOGIN in the Name field and your SFSU PASSWORD in the Password field.
  8. Enter 92390176 in the Number field (for the 2 hour limit line) or
    Enter 83263 in the Number field (for the 15 minute limit line).
  9. Click the Connect button.
