Using HyperTerminal for Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP
Hyperterminal is a basic modem communications program that comes with the Microsoft Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP operating systems. It is used as a mechanism to dial into your Internet UNIX account to use text-based Internet programs such as PINE, TIN, and LYNX. Hyperterminal does not give one PPP Internet Access; thus, you can not use graphical Internet Applications such as Netscape, Eudora and Internet Explorer using this dial-up method. If you desire to use graphical Internet applications please follow the instructions for SFSU Dial-up PPP Internet access at http://www.sfsu.edu/~doit/helpdesk/kits.htmTo set up Hyperterminal to dial into SFSU's dial-in modems, follow the following steps.
- If you are using Windows 95:
Click on thebutton (from the Windows taskbar) select Programs => Accessories => HyperTerminal.
A folder will open and display the contents of the HyperTerminal Folder.
If you are using Windows 98/Me/2000/XP:
Click on thebutton (from the Windows taskbar) select Programs => Accessories => Communications=>HyperTerminal.
- If you are using Windows 95 (other Windows users skip this step):
Double-click on theicon. (The name might be hypertrm.exe instead. This just means that the options are set to view the file extensions). This will launch the program.
- At the Connection Description dialog box, enter a name for the connection, preferably SFSU followed by the SFSU dial-in phone number you will be using, i.e., if you are planning to use the 405-4200 number, you should name your connection, "SFSU 405-4200". (If you are out of the 415 area code, then you will have to fill in 415 in the area code blank as well).
Please refer to Modem Resources for additional phone numbers.
- Choose an icon for your connection. Any icon will suffice, you need not be a MCI customer to use the MCI icon.
- Click the OK button.
- In the Phone number field enter the phone number you will be dialing. For instance, in our example above, you would enter the phone number, 405-4200. For non-local calls, type 1 415 405 4200.
- Click the OK button.
- Save these connection settings by clicking File => Save.
- If you wish to dial in for a connection now, simply click the Dial button.
- Next time you wish to connect, you would select Start (from the taskbar) => Programs => Accessories => HyperTerminal and double click on the name of the new icon you created. In our example above, the icon you would click on is:
(This file may have a .htm extension depending on how you have your options set to view file names).
