Installing Hummingbird HostExplorer for Windows 95/98/Me

The size of the hostexplorer95.exe self-extracting file is 15,742 KB. You will need an additional 23 megabytes of free disk space on your hard drive (approximately 38 Megabytes of free disk space total) in order to extract and fully install HostExplorer. This version will work on Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Millennium (Me) operating systems.
Remove Older Versions of Host Explorer
  1. If you have a previous version of Host Explorer installed remove it by clicking on the Start button, selecting the Control Panel Control Panel icon and double-clicking on the Add/Remove icon Add/Remove icon. Select Host Explorer and click on the remove button.
  2. If you are prompted to reboot your machine do so before installing the new version..

Installing Host Explorer

  1. Download the hostexplorer95.exe file to a temporary directory on your PC.
  2. Using Windows Explorer double-click on the hostexplorer95.exe file. You will be prompted to extract to the C:\ directory. You should accept this and click the 'Start' button. (If you want to install to another drive, change the drive letter).
  3. Click on the OK button when the windows indicates the files have been extracted correctly.
  4. The Hummingbird Install Wizard window will appear. Click on the 'Next' button to continue.
  5. The License Agreement window will appear. Read the license and if you agree with the terms click on the 'Yes, I agree' button.

6. The next window will prompt you to choose either an update or custom install. Click on the button next to the word 'Complete' then click on the ‘Next' button.
7. The next window will specify the default installation directory as C:\Program Files\HostExplorer.95. You should accept this and click on the 'Next' button.
8. The next window will specify the default user installation directory as C:\Program Files\HostExplorer.95\user. You should accept this and click on the 'Next' button.
9. At the next window click on the 'Finish' button.
10. At the 'Online Registration' Window click on the 'Register Later' button. At the next window, click on the 'Finished' button.
11. At the 'Shortcuts on your Desktop?' window, you can click on the 'Next' button if you want shortcuts to be placed on your desktop. If you do not want shortcuts to be created, you can click on the 'No' radio button and then click on the 'Next' button.
12. The next window will notify you that installation was successful. Click on the 'Ok' button to close the window.
13. The next window will notify you that you will need to close all applications and restart Windows in order for HostExplorer to be setup correctly. You should click on the 'Yes' button.

Accessing the Internet Login Servers

  1. Click on the ‘Start’ button and select the ‘Programs -> HostExplorer -> Telnet’ menu item. The ‘Open Session’ dialogue box will open.
  2. Expand the view of the VT folder to display the preconfigured session profiles, apollo or orion.
  3. Click on the apollo profile, then click on the ‘Connect’ button to connect to that server.

Accessing MVS

  1. Click on the ‘Start’ button and select the ‘Programs -> HostExplorer -> TN3270’ menu item. The ‘Open Session’ dialogue box will open.
  2. Expand the view of the 3270 folder to display the preconfigured session profile, mvs.
  3. Click on the mvs profile then click on the ‘Connect’ button to connect to that server.

Problems?

  • If you receive messages during the install that certain files can not be extracted or copied you should first uninstall the previous version of Host Explorer and restart your machine before running the new installation.
  • If having problems connecting to MVS, check the session profile to make sure they are similar to the screen shots below. Make sure the 'Send OEM reply to RPQ' option is not checked otherwise the program may hang when logging in.
