Macintosh Internet Access using Open Transport /PPP

Macintosh Operating Systems 7.0 - 7.55

Note: Older Macintosh Systems did not have the necessary software components required for Internet Access built into the operating system. Follow the instructions below if your Macintosh is running System 7.0 through System 7.55. (You can find out what System software your Macintosh is using by clicking on the Applemenu and selecting 'About this Computer'). If you are using Mac OS 7.6 or greater please follow the appropriate instructions above for the specific version of the Macintosh operating system you are using.

Follow these instructions to copy the Internet Kit to disk.

Hold the Option key while you click on the SFSU Internet Kit Installer link below. Then save the file to the hard disk of the computer you are using. If you are in one of the campus labs you may need to save this file to the temporary save folder on the hard disk. The file Mac_Internet_Installer.hqx will be downloaded to your computer and should convert automatically to SFSU Internet Kit. If it does not, you will need to convert it using Stuffit Expander. Once the file has been converted to the SFSU Internet Kit Installer icon, drag the icon to your disk.

You will need to de-BinHex the SFSU Installer files. Netscape 2.0 or later will do this automatically, otherwise you will need Stuffit Expander to convert them. If the computer you are using has Stuffit Expander already installed, it should automatically perform the BinHex conversion to create the Installer icon. Information on downloading Stuffit Expander is available from Aladdin Systems.

Installing the Internet kit (Mac OS System 7.0-7.5 only)

If you are installing the kit for the first time start by reading the SFSU Internet Kit for Macintosh installation Instructions. Print a copy if you don't already have one.

To create the installation disk you need one blank, formatted high density disk.

You also need MacTCP version 2.0.6 or Open Transport v 1.1 or higher. MacTCP is a licensed Apple product, included with System 7.5, and many Internet Starter kits. SFSU students, staff, and faculty can bring a disk to ADM 110 to pick-up a copy. Open Transport is included with System 7.5.3 or higher.
