Tired of busy signals?
There are alternatives to the SFSU overburdened modem pool.
The Bay Area has a large selection of Internet Service Providers (ISP), some of which offer student discounts. The SF Yahoo Directory maintains a comprehensive listing. Ask about student pricing when you call.
Special Issues to be aware of when using a commercial ISP to connect to SFSU resources
- Library CD-Rom Databases: You can not directly access the CD-ROM databases in the J. Paul Leonard Library without first following the special configuration instructions for your web browser. Please follow the instructions as outlined by the J.Paul Leonard Library guide on accessing databases from off-campus.
- E-mail, Telnet, and FTP Problems: If you have signed up with a DSL or cable modem service and cannot telnet, send or receive SFSU e-mail or ftp your computer's IP address may not be fully registered by your ISP. Read more about this issue and what you need to tell your ISP's technical support staff to correct the problem. If you have problems checking mail make sure your SMTP server matches the SMTP server of your ISP.
- Newsgroup Access: Users of commercial ISP's cannot access the the newsgroups on the CSU news server - news.csus.edu because the CSU news server only allows access from SFSU connections. A subscriber can use Usenet news, however, by telneting to one of our login servers and typing tin. Another option is to use the ISP's own news service. Please check your ISP's web site or contact their technical support staff regarding access to a news server.
