Kumiko Jones

2013-2014 Osher Reentry Scholarship Winner

"...After graduating from my high school in Japan in the mid-nineties, the country was experiencing a difficult time economically, and this situation forced me to postpone the pursuit of my educational objectives. Six years ago, I married a U.S. citizen and relocated to the United States. This has provided me with a newfound opportunity to continue my education. It was my first time to live abroad and become immersed in a new culture. I worked hard to get my English proficiency up to the university level, and now I am enrolled in the bachelor program in music at San Francisco State University. Even though my education is beginning again from learning a new language, culture and people, I am enjoying this challenge to achieve my educational objectives, and this challenge has greatly motivated me."

"...winning the Osher Reentry Scholarship will allow me to focus on my academic objectives without risk of a discontinuation in my education due to increasing costs. This scholarship program is an inspiration for those of us who seek another chance to succeed in our academic and career goals, and I am truly thankful for having been chosen."
