2013-2014 Community College Transfer Honor Scholarship Winner
"I am writing to express my gratitude for being selected for the Community College Transfer Honor Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year. I will be entering San Francisco State University as a junior this upcoming Fall 2013 semester and I expect to receive my Bachelor of Art degree in Sociology by Spring 2015. Upon completion of my BA, I aim to pursue a PhD program in Sociology with a focus on social justice participatory action research. I strongly believe that SFSU is the springboard for my academic future in active social awareness and research which benefits the greater community.
When I decided that I wanted to enroll in junior college, I had no financial or emotional support from my parents. Rather, they discouraged me from attending college because higher education conflicts with their religious beliefs. I wanted to prove to myself and to my parents that I could rise above their lack of support to become a student that could not only support herself through the college experience, but also thrive and achieve academic excellence. I am so proud of all that I have accomplished at the community college level; from maintaining the Dean's List of Honors each consecutive semester at College of San Mateo to presenting my last semester's Honors Program research at the Annual Honors Research Symposium at Stanford on May 4th of this year to receiving this very special scholarship for transfer Honors students. This scholarship is worth more to me than just the financial aid-although the aid is so helpful because I am putting myself through college-it is the honor that I bring to those around me and the honor that I feel myself for being awarded for my achievements. Thank you so much for this opportunity."
