Syl Kocieda, Philosophy graduate student

Syl is a master's student in the graduate program in Philosophy at SF State. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Temple University, Syl worked in the pharmaceutical industry in Southern California for a number of years while taking evening classes in philosophy at Irvine Valley College. In the Fall of 2012, Syl will join the PhD program in Philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She is primarily interested in metaphysics, epistemology and ethics in early modern philosophy. Her secondary interests include animal ethics, critical race theory, and feminist history of philosophy.

Syl is a volunteer with Molding Hearts, an organization that supports working-class adults with developmental disabilities. In her spare time she enjoys watching old films, re-viewing Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, collecting postpunk-meets-darkwave music, and finding beauty in the work of Edward Gorey.

Update: Syl Kocieda obtained her Master's in Philosophy at SF State in 2012 and went on to win, in her first year as a doctoral student in philosophy at University of North Carolina, a prestigious Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship! Congratulations Syl!
