Program Purpose

The Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program brings talented college seniors and recent graduates to Washington, D.C., where they are placed in congressional offices and learn about health policy issues, with a focus on issues affecting racial and ethnic minority and underserved communities.

Program Description

Through the 10-week summer program, Scholars gain knowledge about federal legislative procedure and health policy issues, while further developing their critical thinking and leadership skills. In addition to gaining experience in a congressional office, Scholars participate in seminars and site visits to augment their knowledge of health care issues, and write and present a health policy research memo that addresses a problem of concern to disadvantaged populations.


Scholars receive approximately $7,500 in support, which includes transportation/airfare to and from Washington, D.C.; lodging at Howard University in D.C. ; a daily expense allowance for meals and local transportation; a $2,000 stipend upon successful completion of the program.

Applicant Profile

Successful applicants will be members of populations adversely affected by racial or ethnic disparities in healh, show evidence of academic achievement, have experience working with programs that address health issues disproportionately affecting racial and ethnic minorities or underserved communities, or have done previous academic work related to health disparities.


Senior or recent college graduate (within one year of application date) from an underrepresented group.


U.S. citizens only.
