Program Purpose
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. It offers programs and funding for students, faculty, researchers and others in higher education, represents the German higher education system abroad, and promote Germany as an academic and research destination.
Program Description
Three times a year the EMG Internship Program runs 1-3 month internships in German State Parliaments. The program is ideal for students planning careers in U.S. or Canadian regional government, with an interest in policy issues including the environment, education, and healthcare.
Benefits
Applicants pay an application fee and participants must pay a $500 program fee upon acceptance. Each American participant receives a stipend of around EUR 500 to cover basic expenses for housing, local transportation, and food. Participant should be able to provide additional funds for travel expenses, emergencies, and incidentals.
Applicant Profile
Applicants must have a minimum of 2 years of university coursework in international relations, public administration, political science, law, economics, German studies, or European studies with an emphasis on Germany. German language skills must be at the "high-intermediate" level, and some relevant work experience is required.
Eligibility
Undergraduate or graduate students in an eligible field, 18-30 years of age, as well as recent graduates within 3 months of graduation.
Citizenship
U.S. or Canadian citizens.
Deadline
Usually October for Spring program, December for Summer program, and March for Fall program.
