Program Purpose
The Collegiate School Teaching Institute is designed to mentor and introduce first and second year teachers of color to teaching in independent schools.
Program Description
Rigorous two-week summer program introduces college and graduate students of color to teaching and independent schools. New teachers of color in contract with an independent school with zero to two years of teaching experience are invited to submit applications to the annual Teaching Institute. Topics include lesson planning, classroom management, teaching and learning styles, diversity, independent school culture, curriculum, and interview and job search processes. The program includes a cultural component aimed at familiarizing participants with New York City and its resources.
Benefits
Participants are reimbursed for reasonable travel expenses to and from New York, and provided with housing at Columbia University's International House, most meals, and a $500 stipend.
Applicant Profile
Applicants should be currently working for or seeking a position with an NAIS (independent) school and secure a $1,000 contribution from the school towards the program.
Eligibility
New teachers of color – African American, Asian American, Latino, Native American, and Multiracial Americans – who have a bachelor's degree and are in contract with an independent school.
Citizenship
U.S. citizens only.
Deadline
Admission is rolling up to final deadline which is usually in May.
