Program Purpose and Description
This eight-week program (June - August) provides motivated undergraduates interested in marine science careers with a summer research experience at the Bodega Marine Laboratory, an unparalleled and biologically rich stretch of the California coast north of San Francisco that is part of the University of California at Davis. Students conduct independent research in areas of study that include a variety of organisms, marine and coastal terrestrial habitats, coastal oceanography, invasive species ecology, pollution effects on marine life, and biodiversity. Faculty and other mentors provide one-on-one research training, from choosing a topic to writing a paper. Participants learn how to communicate their research results during modules in Science Ethics and in Effective Science Communication, and develop essential career survival skills, including scientific ethics.
Each summer, BML welcomes a diverse and interactive community of visiting students and scientists. REU students have an opportunity to interact with undergraduates, graduate students, faculty members, researchers, and staff. Barbecues, soccer games, seminar socials, and informal get-togethers are held throughout the summer. Students reside in the BML dormitories with other undergraduates participating in summer courses.
Benefits
Program provides a $3,600 stipend, housing, meals, and travel costs.
Applicant Profile
The program gives priority to underrepresented students early in their career and without significant prior research experience.
