Program Purpose
This program is aimed at promoting diversity in the national biosciences workforce. An important goal of this REU is to provide opportunities for students without ready access to research opportunities, especially from groups under-represented in the U.S. bioscience workforce.
Program Description
This 10-week program integrates academic and professional development by providing group tutorials on cell, developmental, evolutionary biology, and bioinformatics. Students will also be assigned individual research projects in Integrative Biology, Molecular & Cell Biology and Plant & Microbial Biology. In addition, students will participate in informal faculty research seminars, and workshops on the graduate school application process and related career opportunities.
Benefits
Students will be awarded a $4,500 stipend. The prgram will also provide on-campus housing , meals, and up to $500 for travel costs. and excursions and social programs highlighting attractions of the Bay Area.
Applicant Profile
Highly motivated students interested in biological research and the possibility of pursuing a Ph.D. rather than an M.D. Applicants are NOT required to have previous research experience. Underrepresented minority groups, economically disadvantaged backgrounds, or students who are the first generation in their families to attend college are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility
Must have completed at least one course in biology and one course in chemistry by June.
Citizenship
U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Deadline
Usually the beginning of January.
