Program Purpose
Named in honor of the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize winner and former APSA President, Ralph J. Bunche, the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute aims to encourage underrepresented students to pursue academic careers in political science.
Program Description
The Summer Institute is a 5-week, academically intensive summer program designed to simulate the graduate school experience, provide mentoring, and expand academic opportunities for underrepresented students. RBSI introduces 20 students to the intellectual demands of graduate school and political science research methods. At the heart of the program are two transferable credit courses, one in quantitative analysis, the other in race and American politics. For the final project, students prepare original research papers.
Classes are held on the Duke University campus, where students have access to a fully equipped computer laboratory, library collections, and other university facilities. Educational activities range from formal classroom settings to informal dinners and lunches with prominent political scientists and Duke University faculty.
Benefits
The Fellows Program provides full tuition, transportation, and room and board, plus a weekly stipend, to attend the Summer Institute at Duke University. GRE test-taking strategies are provided by Princeton Review. Top students present their papers at APSA's Annual Meeting, with all expenses paid by the association.
Eligibility
African American, Latino/Latina, Native American or Pacific Island juniors majoring in political science or a related discipline who intend to attend graduate school in political science. Also eligible are students pursuing scholarship on issues affecting underrepresented groups.
Citizenship
U.S. citizens only.
