Program Purpose

Named in honor of the U.S. Secretary of State George Marshall, Marshall Scholarships commemorate the humane ideals of the Marshall Plan and the continuing gratitude of the British people to their American counterparts. Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom.

Program Description

Funded by Marshall Commission and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, up to 3 talented individuals with strong backgrounds in environmentally relevant sciences are selected each year to receive up to 5 years of graduate education assistance. The first 2 years are supported through a Marshall Scholarship to a university in Great Britain. EPA-Marshall Scholars receive up to 3 additional years of support towards a doctoral degree, either in England or the U.S.

Supported Fields

Applicants must be pursuing a graduate degree in one of the following fields: physical, life or systematic sciences, engineering and technology, economics, social and behavioral sciences, urban and regional planning, communication sciences.

Benefits

The Scholarship provides university fees, cost of living expenses, an annual book grant, a thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States and, when applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse.

Applicant Profile

Marshall scholars are intellectually distinguished, America's "potential leaders, opinion formers, and decision makers," "who will contribute to advancement of knowledge in science, technology, humanities, social sciences, and creative arts at Britain's centers of academic excellence." Preference will be given to candidates who combine high academic ability with the capacity to play an active part in the life of the United Kingdom university to which they go, and to those who display a potential to make a significant contribution to their own society.

Selection Criteria

The proposed program of study must be relevant to environmental protection, restoration or stewardship, environmental public health, or ecosystem health. Preference will be given to applicants whose work emphasizes global environmental problems, international collaborative approaches to environmental problem solving, technology exchange programs, or improving international dialogue on the environment.

Application Process

To be eligible, applicants must first be selected as Marshall Scholars, applying in the usual way. Applications are made in one of 8 regions in the U.S. Candidates may apply in one region only – either that in which they have their permanent home address or that in which they are studying.
