Program Purpose
This program aims to engage students in cutting edge, interdisciplinary scientific research, increase the diversity of undergraduates participating in biophotonics science and technology (CBST)-related research, and introduce students to career paths in biophotonics.
Program Description
For a period of 8-12 weeks, interns spend 40 hours a week in a laboratory under the direction of a CBST researcher in an ongoing research project in Advanced Bioimaging and Spectroscopy; Molecular and Cellular Biophotonics, or Medical Biophotonics--Sensors and Assays. Interns present on their summer projects at the Annual Summer Internship Scientific Meeting. Program highlights include a seminar series, weekly career development workshops, and an annual CBST retreat.
Benefits
Students are awarded $500 per week for the duration of the summer internship, plus travel expenses for students who live at least 100 miles from the summer research internship site. The program provides housing information, but does not make housing arrangements for its interns.
Applicant Profile
Applicants are invited from majors in Chemical, Biochemical or Biomedical Engineering; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related fields.
Application Process
Applicants may request a research internship at one of the following locations: the U.C. Davis campus, U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, or Mills College in Oakland.
Eligibility
Sophomores and juniors are preferred. Freshmen and non-graduating seniors may also apply.
Citizenship
U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
Deadline
Usually early March.
