Program Website

The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The Program supports students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, including students with high financial need, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. Scholarships of up to $5,000 are awarded, depending on the length of study and student need, towards the cost of program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance and international airfare. The average award is $4,000. Students who receive the scholarship are eligible to apply for an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement for a total possible award of up to $8,000. Recipients are required to carry out a follow-on project that promotes the Gilman Scholarship in their academic institutions or communities. Apply in the academic term prior to the start date of the study abroad program. This program is administered by SF State's Office of International Programs/Study Abroad Office.
