He initially started research on Healthy Computing at SFSU with the collaboration from HR (Denise Fox and Marcia Allsopp) in 1993. Then with student collaborators such as Dianne Shumay he explored strategies to improve their health status at their workstation as wellas publish the initial Healthy Computing Email Tips. In 1997, he was joined in this collaboration with Ms. Katherine H. Gibney. The approach initially focused on individual prevention and this approach has been morphed into the group training programfor coaches.
This recent approach under the leadership of the employees (Teri Liming, Barbara Cleveland, etc.) has shifted the program to a truly prevention approach to bring health into the worksite. As one of the employees has said, “There is life after five”.

Ray Grott has been at San Francisco State working with the RET Project for over 14 years. His program works with people with disabilities throughout the Bay Area, matching them up with appropriate assistive technology. In recent years, he has also provided ergonomic assessments to dozens of injured faculty and staff on campus through the Workers Compensation program. In addition, he helps arrange work-related accommodations for university employees with disabilities. He teaches a class in assistive technology here on campus and leads workshops and courses at professional conferences across the country.
Besides teaching and providing hands-on services, Ray spends many hours in his shop modifying off-the-shelf products and designing custom equipment. One of his latest efforts has been adapting a range of baby-care equipment--such as car seats, high-chairs, and cribs--for parents with disabilities. His teaching, creative problem solving, and innovative designs have earned him national awards and a reputation as a leader in his field.
