English Department Scholarships

If an application is required, click on the word “application” in the description of the scholarship to view/print the application. Applications may also be obtained outside of the English Department’s main office in HUM 289.

 

 

IMPORTANT DEADLINE INFORMATION!

Applications for scholarships awarded in the

FALL semester are due in the Department office on the 1st Wednesday in April

 

Applications for scholarships awarded in the

SPRING semester are due in the Department office on the 1st Wednesday in November  

 

Applications for the TESOL Conventions Scholarship

are normally due in the first week of February

 

 

ASW Scholarship – provides an award of $500 to a student in the B.A. in English Literature program at SFSU. Awarded in Fall semester. Requirements: application (also available in Dept. office); minimum 3.0 GPA; written statement.

 

Debra Plousha Moore and John E. Moore Jr. Scholarship provides an award of $1,000 to a student in any degree or certificate program in the English Department at SFSU; recipient must demonstrate service and commitment to the African American community, and an interest in women’s issues, African American literature, or African American women. Awarded in Fall semester. Requirements: letter of application; minimum enrollment of 3 units in semester of disbursement.

 

Ellanore and Maurice Bassan English Department Scholarship – provides an award of $500 to a graduate student in the M.A. in Literature Program at SFSU who has demonstrated excellence in literary study. Awarded in Spring semester. Requirements: statement of academic and research goals and of financial need; at least one letter of recommendation; completion of at least nine units in M.A. Literature Program; minimum 3.0 GPA; enrollment in at least one semester of the current academic year.

 

Jan Gregory Postsecondary Reading and Composition Scholarship – provides an award of $500 to a graduate student in the Postsecondary Reading and Composition Program of the English Department at SFSU. Awarded in Fall semester. Requirements: written statement; minimum 3.0 GPA.

 

Jim Brogan – Jack Post Scholarship – provides two awards of $1,000 each to two San Francisco State students interested in literature based on queer/gay/lesbian/bisexual/transsexual perspectives. Awarded in Fall semester. Requirements: application (also available in Dept. office); minimum 3.0 GPA; written statement.

 

Jim Kohn Scholarship – provides up to five awards of at least $500 each to graduate students in the M.A. in TESOL Program at SFSU. Awarded in Fall semester. Requirements: application (also available in Dept. office); minimum 3.0 GPA; written statement.

 

R. Joel Dorius Memorial Scholarship – provides an award of one semester’s tuition to a full-time graduate student in the M.A. in Literature Program at SFSU who is interested in the study of Shakespeare and/or Renaissance literature. Awarded in Fall semester.  Requirements: application (also available in Dept. office); minimum 3.0 GPA; written statement.

 

Randall Nakayama Memorial Scholarship – provides an award of $250 to a graduate student in the M.A. in Literature Program at SFSU for the purpose of presenting a paper at a professional conference. Awarded in Fall and Spring semesters. Requirements: paper abstract/proposal, evidence of acceptance for participation in a professional conference, and conference information; written statement; minimum 3.0 GPA.

 

TESOL Convention Scholarship – provides up to four graduate students in the M.A. in TESOL Program at SFSU with at least $500 for the purpose of attending the annual TESOL Convention. Awarded in time for travel (late February/early March). Requirements: Statement explaining goals of conference attendance; statement of financial need.
