Wiebke Mueller, Web Accessibility Consultant
I have been working for the San Francisco State University since 2006. I am the campus Web Accessibility Consultant working in the Disability Programs and Resource Center (DPRC). Before that, I worked as an adaptive technology trainer at SF State.
Technology and working for a "good cause" are two things that I have focused on in my work life. I have always worked in and for both the public and non-profit sectors, and I know how important the use of technology for these sectors is.
One of my first jobs in Germany was for a human rights organization. My project focused on new and old media usage in teaching high school students about racism and environmental problems. Before I came to the US, II worked at the University of Bremen and implemented eLearning scenarios in the university curricula. We used different eLearning tools and media and evaluated the effectiveness of different eLeaning scenarios.
I became involved with web accessibility in 2003 when I worked on the first “Contest of Accessible Websites” in German-speaking countries. I developed test criteria based on W3C WAI 1.0 guidelines and supervised the assessments on more than 300 websites.
Web accessibility is a challenging area since new technology is emerging every day and most often these exciting new tools and applications are not developed with accessibility in mind. Our job at SF State, involves many people throughout the campus including Academic Technology, DoIT and the DPRC. We seek solutions, and sometimes compromises, to serve the need and desire to use new technology with our commitment to providing the same opportunities to students with disabilities.
