Mission

Perform operations in four time-frames:

The Past. Act as the repository for where we have been by letting that past serve as the prologue to the future. Utilize the knowledge of the genesis of systems and technology at SFSU to illuminate current and future operations. Abet the decision making process with knowledge of earlier successes, failures and dead-ends.

The Present. Responsible for the activities and personnel involved in Change Control and Database Administration. This frame also involves crisis management, troubleshooting, ad hoc team building and high bandwidth communication with departmental and end users. The remainder of the mission in the present concerns change management or the actual implementation of projects originally conceived in the distant future and approved and funded in the near future.

The Near Future. This time frame involves goal setting, application design, capacity planning, platform selection and integration management. It is concerned with all phases (except the network) of what we want to be doing in the next few months. This activity is time sensitive and often involves just-in-time support. It sometimes involves coding difficult pieces of critical modules. It always involves the selection of existing appropriate software and hardware to accomplish the goal.

The More Distant Future. Long-range technology planning to present a vision for the integration of Information Technology within the context of the future of the academy. As long-range plans evolve they will assume concrete form which includes the practical means of making that vision a reality. The long-range planning process involves early recognition of industry trends and the differentiation of probable future software from probable future vaporware. Within this time frame also lie the decisions about what to do first; how to keep the technology stack in order so that no selected platform requires the existence of technology which SFSU will not be able to obtain. All of this, of course, happens within the framework of the cost constraints and other mandates of the CSU.
